What are counterfeit coins?

Counterfeit coins are coins that are not genuine and are manufacturing by someone without being in knowledge of state. The fraud and art or manufacturing counterfeit coins is so old and has been in the society since ancient times. Usually counterfeiting of valuable and antique coins is more common and it is done to simulate antique coins that are of high value to people. Counterfeiting of high valued coins is done with high standards to deceive purchasers.

How to detect counterfeit coins:

Counterfeit coins are usually made by adding liquid metal into the dies or some type of molds. This procedure leaves some weaknesses on counterfeited coins such as die mark or cracks and it became easy for us to identify them. If you are in doubt that you are trying to be deceived by someone then compare the suspected coin with the genuine one. Mostly coins have corrugated outer edges which are referred as ‘reeding’. In genuine and original coins, these reedings are uniform and indistinctive but counterfeit coins have uneven, missed or crooked reedings. It is also very necessary to only buy coins from a certified dealer and never procure them online.
Why counterfeit coins are made and by whom?

In the past, counterfeit coins were made for many reasons. They were made during the shortage of original coins to cover up the shortfall and to achieve their adequate amount and supplied as counterfeit money for sale. Once in Roman Britain, counterfeited coins were produced to such extent that they were present in the market with the same number as original ones. People also made them for their own benefit and used them as counterfeit money. Undoubtedly, it has not been an easy or a cheap process as it requires a good supply of metal, some dies and molds, a crucible or a furnace and many other things. This means that counterfeit coins were not only been made by some poor or needy people and this process of forgery must had involved more than one person with some financial support also. In the past, many people have caught by police or agencies those who were already wealthy individuals and involved in producing counterfeit coins and they were put into the treason.

Types of counterfeit coins:

There are three categories of counterfeit coins and they are Cast Counterfeit, Struck counterfeit and an Altered coins. Cast counterfeit is usually an inexpensive procedure of producing these coins. It involves producing a mold first. Once after molds become available, it is relatively an easy process. Molten or liquid metal is poured into prepared molds or dies. Struck counterfeit coins are made by punching two coin dies in a press. This coining press requires several tons of pressure to press them. For this method, coin dies are made by many different methods. Struck counterfeit manufacturing process is actually the most expensive method of producing counterfeit coins and that’s why only high valuable coins are generally made by using this method. Altered coin is most cheap and also an easy way to produce counterfeit coins. It involves taking an ordinary coin and alters it to become like a high valued coin.
