So, what is 5G?

How does 5G work?

5G networks operate on three different bands: low-band spectrum, mid-band spectrum and high-band spectrum or high-band (also known as mmwave).

• Low-band Spectrum (<1GHz): Comprehensive coverage with speeds of 100 Mbps and excellent penetration capabilities
• Mid-band spectrum (<6GHz): Limited coverage with up to 1 Gbps and medium penetration capability
• High-band spectrum (<6GHz): Low coverage with speeds up to 10 Gbps and low penetration capabilities

There has been much talk about 5G in 2019, but which phones are officially available in the US?

• Galaxy S10 5G: Available with AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon

• Available with Moto 5G mode, Moto Z2, Z3 and Z4: Verizon

• With many 5G phones now expanding to markets and networks, tech leaders are rushing to release their contribution to growing leadership.

Here are some of the 5G phones that are rumored to debut in 2020:

IPhone 12

The annual release of Apple's newest iPhone is always an encouraging occasion, but there are rumors that the iPhone 12 and all its replicas will come in 5G versions or at least support 5G. Tech giants along with Qualcomm will launch the 5G headset globally later this year.

Nokia

Nokia's contribution to the 5G wave makes it a more affordable option for consumers. Brand phone manufacturer, HMD Global, sees a special case in the 5G model for much less than the devices currently on the market. The Samsung Galaxy S10 5G retails for $ 1,299.99, while the LG V50 ThinQ sells for $ 999.

"We would love to see you at 5G today, at half the price," said Juho Sarvakas, HMD Global Chief Product Officer.

Nokia has not yet announced the specifications for its release, but the smartphone will be launched earlier this year using the Snapdragon 735 chipset.

Sony

Sony has made it clear that the 5G device is on its way, but not until network mobility is more widespread among wireless providers.

"We are collaborating heavily with our partners to develop for 5G, and we will be introducing the 5G model according to country and customer needs," said Mitsuya Kishida, president of Sony Mobile Told TechRadar.

As for the solid release date or device specifications, the design of the Xperia 1 does not mean that the company is in a hurry to drive the wave of the 5G rollout. Once the merger is complete, T-Mobile will be able to add Sprint's existing mid-band 5G technologies to its own low-band and high-band networks.

Verizon

On December 23, Verizon's high-band 5G network is available in 31 major cities such as Los Angeles and Chicago, and is compatible with the Samsung Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10+ 5G variants along with the Moto Z2, Z3 and Z4 Force phones . By 2020, Nikki Palmer, Verizon's chief product development officer, plans to make coverage a top priority.

“We see extensive coverage in areas where most people are part of Venice [such as NFL stadiums and sports fields],” Palmer told Tom Guide.

Do I need 5G coverage?

It's up to you. If you are not impressed with the speed and capabilities of your 4G network and currently live in or near a major city, you may find that 5G is ideal for you and your wireless activities. However, if you're in a more rural area, happy with your speed, or just want to put some money in your pocket (5G phones can be expensive), it's best to wait until the technology becomes more common. And the coverage is not very broad.
