We often take pride in our own abilities and achievements. Whether it's as small as cooking our own breakfast or as big as winning prestigious work and service awards. Maintaining our own health and hygiene is also a pretty big achievement, and today, we'll speak about some DIY mosquito control methods we can implement if we have a few of these mozzies buzzing around all the while.

Some may not realize the importance of mosquito pest control, but when you save yourself from diseases like malaria, dengue, chikungunya, West Nile fever, Zika fever and several others, you may understand. Home mosquito control can be done in two ways - by yourself or by the pest control professionals. Today, we'll discuss the best methods of DIY mosquito control.

Become a DIY mosquito pest control pro!

1) Coffee grounds
Who knew coffee could kill mosquitoes? Turns out it can kill their eggs too! All you have to do is drop coffee grounds in any standing water at home and around your home. The eggs in the water will rise to the surface and end up dying due to the lack of oxygen which makes this a good method of mosquito control.

2) Garlic
While this isn't a mosquito killer, it's a good repellent as mosquitoes don't like the smell of garlic. All you have to do is crush some cloves of garlic and boil it in water. Next, you can spread the smell of the solution around your home which should be good enough to keep mosquitoes at bay. You can also add the solution to a spray bottle and spray in strategic areas.

3) Essential oils
Similar to the above, essential oils help in home mosquito control because of the strong scent they each possess. Neem and lavender oil can be mixed in equal proportion and applied on your skin. Neem oil's anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties can keep mosquitoes from biting you. Peppermint oil can be used in a spray bottle with water while camphor oil can be burnt and let the vapour spread all across to kill all existing mosquitoes in the room. Similarly, tea tree oil and other essential oils are all tried and tested ways of conducting mosquito control at home.

4) Mosquito repellent plants
Feverfew, Basil, Bee Balm, Citronella, Floss Flower, Lavender, Lemon Balm, Catnip and more are examples of plants that have natural mosquito-repelling properties. There's no headache about getting aftereffects from chemicals and you can strategically place them on windowsills and other entry points to stop mosquitoes from entering your homes.

5) Get chemical repellents
There are many items available in the market these days for mosquito pest control including creams, lotions, sprays, gels, machines, vaporizers and more. If choosing a cream to apply on your skin, make sure you have the main ingredient which is DEET. If that isn't in the ingredients, search for another option. Machines are also good, the only downside being the spread of chemicals at home.

These are some of our best tips to those who wish to do DIY mosquito control. However, if all of them fail, there's also a back-up plan which in this case would be getting professional help to flush out these mosquitoes from home. The good part about this is that the exterminators don't look at repelling mosquitoes but killing them and reducing them from the source. This means that you won't just be free from mosquitoes for the week or month, but for a fair while to come. And if in case they return during your warranty period, call your pest controller and they'll sort it for free!
