Defining High Voltage and High Current Power Supply

Posted by HV mtech on January 24th, 2020

When defining any regulated HV power supplies used for a specific application, you need to remember that the latest improvements in the technology of power supply made the newest designs even lighter and smaller and yet more efficient for a considerable period.

The modern designs create and operate at extremely high frequencies that range between 20 kHz and 100 kHz. When it comes to high voltage high current power supply it should be operated only by experienced and trained personnel in hazards of high voltage.

Factors That Result in Advancements: Important power elements that come with reduced losses even when they function at a frequency and the advancement of techniques related to low power conversion.

Specification Inspection: This may be one of the basic mistakes most engineers make while defining the high voltage high current power supply and specifies any requirement excessively for size, ripple, output power, and temperature. This excessive temperature can result in excessive costs as well as reduced reliability because of the highly complex and higher power density.

Identify the Specification Parameters: The manufacturer of the power supply provides specifications such as: Input & Output voltages, Ripple, Output regulation, Output stability. You can consider the following for helpful information: Input & Output Voltage, Output Current, Stability, Ripple, Pulsed Operation, Stored Energy, Load Regulation, Efficiency, Line Regulation, and Dynamic Regulation.

Input Voltage: The source of input power defined for any specific model is analyzed based on factors that include output power efficiency of that supply and in which form the power is present in that application.

Output Voltage: Considering the high voltage high current power supply, is normally engineered for constant operation at optimum output voltage mentioned in a data sheet .For example, laboratory, bench models, as well as units like a high-power rack, are easily adjustable on full voltage range that is 0 to the maximum range mentioned for output voltage. The output voltage is determined in such models using either analog/digital meters as previously mentioned.

Output Current: High voltage high current power supply units are created to support constant functioning at full current mentioned in the datasheet. The current limitation is ideally created in the design itself to avoid overload of currents from going high above over 110% of the given output current maximum value.

The overload trips out can be determined to discontinue the power supply in cases where the minimum output current exceeds current regulation. This is seen in high power modules and racks. It helps manage the output current through the front panel potentiometer/remote source. It offers automatic crossover to the regulation of voltage where the load current is less as compared to the programmed value.
