Bacterial vaginosis is caused by an imbalance of the naturally occurring bacteria within the vagina. Normally, the pH level of a healthy vagina is slightly acidic, and this supports the growth and maintenance of "beneficial" bacteria which, in turn, keeps the vagina healthy. There are several reasons why the pH level might become alkaline, thus causing an overgrowth of harmful bacteria which causes BV.
