How to Put a Chain Back on a Chainsaw

It is very important to know how to put a chain back on a chainsaw because if you do not you could damage your machine. There are many things that could go wrong and the wrong thing can be really expensive to repair if you do not have the right knowledge about the chainsaw's design. So what do you need to know?

The first thing you need to do is to know the correct way to secure your chainsaw onto your vehicle. One way to do this is to put it on top of the frame, as there is plenty of room under the body and the head. Then pull the handle back up to get it secured. Another option is to use the two extra metal brackets that came with the machine and hang the chainsaw off the frame. With a couple of brackets the chainsaw will be locked in place.

However if you find the bracket too small for the chainsaw and the weight makes the chainsaw drop or are unable to remove the chainsaw from the frame, the best method is to add the chain back on using two loops of nylon wire attached to each other with a nut to the top of the brackets and bolt to the frame. Make sure the bolt is tightened down and also check if it fits properly. If it does it will be very easy to put back on. If you do not have the right equipment for it you can always buy a third party chain for the chainsaw.

A common mistake with some people is that they forget to put the lock nuts on, make sure you pay attention to them when putting back on the chainsaw. If the tension has been reversed the tension will keep pulling the chainsaw out and no matter how good the springs are they will loosen up. This can easily be corrected by tightening the bolts and tension adjustments.

If you have done everything correctly but still the chainsaw has not come loose from the vehicle the first thing you will need to do is to tighten the lock nuts. The next thing to do is to move the chain to the body and see if it will stick. If it does you can loosen the bolts and tighten down the bolts again.

The easiest way to test this is to tighten the bolts and see if they are tightened all the way to the head before checking to see if the chain is not pulling out from the top of the head. The nylock nuts must be very tight when the chain is being removed. If they are loose then you should tighten them again.

Once the chainsaw is free from the frame and the chainsaw is no longer falling out of the front of the vehicle, make sure you secure the nylock nuts. If they are loose then tighten them up and if they are right then tighten them all the way down.
