Mechanical Engineering involves the application of principles of engineering with physics, mathematics and materials science for designing, analysing, manufacturing and maintenance of mechanical systems. It mainly deals with manufacturing, designing, production and operation of machinery.

The primary role of mechanical engineers is to design and build engines and power plants. A thorough understanding of kinematics, mechanics, thermodynamics, structural analysis, materials science and electricity is required to study this particular branch of engineering. Mechanical engineers are now excelling in the fields of composites, mechatronics and nanotechnology as well. Mechanical engineering even engulfs aerospace engineering, civil engineering, petroleum engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering and so on. Aspiring candidates are expected to design and develop everything from a bicycle to fighter jets which can prove to be quite challenging. However, the candidate should be a machine-lover and comfortable working with tools to be a successful mechanical engineer and to make a successful career and living out of it.

Mechanical engineers have scope for placement and progress as professors, researchers, junior engineers, mechanical/sales engineers, assistant executive engineers and can get jobs in reputed companies like Indian Oil, BHEL, BPCL, NTPC, Ashok Leyland and so on.
