There has been a lot of hype in the beauty world about the benefits of microneedling. Chances are you’ve noticed people rolling tiny-paintbrush-like devices over their faces to promote beauty improvement. With the talk about microneedling comes the talk about tiny needles. That is, essentially, what microneedling is. The thought of a bunch of tiny microneedles puncturing your face can sound intimidating and we don’t blame you for wondering if it’s actually safe. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered to tell you everything you need to know about microneedling safety!

What is microneedling?

Microneedling, which is also known as collagen reduction therapy, is a procedure that uses a derma roller. The procedure uses fine needles to puncture the skin creating hundreds of tiny but invisible wounds in the top layer of the skin. It is most commonly used on the face and the small punctures to the skin help to open up the skin to provide many benefits to overall skin health.

The typical cost of microneedling, if performed in an office, will cost you anywhere from 0-0 per session depending on the area that is being worked on. It’s known to be more effective than using typical face rollers such as jade rollers or rose quartz rollers. However, each beauty roller has its individual purpose and works well for what it’s intended to do. Microneedling is just known for being the most effective for treating scars and dark spots caused by aging, injury, acne, and more.

What are the benefits?

There are so many benefits to microneedling which is why it’s becoming so popular. The purpose of microneedling is to increase the production of collagen and skin tissue to smooth skin and create a more toned look. Microneedling is known to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, improve complexion through exfoliating, and increase absorption. It’s also known to help reduce the appearance of scars that have been caused by acne or injuries. Overall, it makes your skin look and feel plumper and younger. However, keep in mind it’s not a one and done type of treatment. To see results and continuous improvement, you’ll need a minimum of 4 sessions of microneedling.

Does it hurt?

Mostly no, but it depends on if you are getting the procedure done at home or in a dermatologist’s office. Microneedling devices for at-home use uses hundreds of tiny needles that when rolled over the skin correctly will actually feel like a massage. It’s important to note that the at-home devices that are used for microneedling come with needles that are much smaller than the ones you can find at a dermatologist’s office. Therefore, dermatologists that perform the procedure in office will most likely apply a topical painkiller to the skin to prevent any discomfort. Both procedures, whether performed at home or in-office, require none to minimal recovery time.

So, it is safe?

Yes! Microneedling is completely safe and a very common practice. Many doctors have conducted research on the benefits and safety of microneedling. It is a minimally invasive treatment that can be performed at home or at the dermatologist’s office. It’s safe for people who are in overall good health, but it’s important to note that women who are pregnant and people who use certain acne medication should avoid the procedure. You may notice your skin looks red or irritated after getting the procedure done but that is completely normal and actually means its working! Microneedling is a safe beauty treatment that shouldn’t leave you intimidated or scared. If you haven’t tried it yet or are scared to give it a shot, consider talking to your dermatologist about it and the many benefits it can offer you.
