1. What are Pop-ups?

The words "pop-up" refer to any Internet browser window that starts without your specific permission; They are almost always flashy ads that try to sell you something or have you write information, for example. Your email address or zip code. They have become the Internet Las Vegas.

Pop-ups are available in different variants, depending on how they are activated on your computer. These flavors are:

Pop-up windows

These are your average and current ads that appear when you visit certain web pages. Some people who manage websites are paid for every pop-up window they provide to visitors to your site. We do not use and will never use pop-ups on this site, so if you notice pop-ups while browsing HowToGetRidOfStuff.com, they are likely caused by something installed on your computer. These are covered further down the page.

popunders

Pop wonders are about the same as pop-ups, unless they open a new Internet browser window under the window you are currently using. You may not even notice this until you close the browser window to see that they are hiding below. Again, these are generally advertising methods used by the operator on one of the websites you have visited recently.

Get out of the consoles

Exit Consoles are just pop-ups that appear when you close a page or leave a site.

Floating ads

Floating ads are very similar to pop-ups in the sense that they appear on the page you're trying to read, but they are enabled by more sophisticated mechanisms. In general, the special code that is embedded in the web page you see appears more graphically and can scroll or zoom to the screen.

2. What causes pop-ups?

All pop-ups are enabled by computer programs that run from a site you visit or run on your local computer. Here's how to identify which type is bothering you.

Website pop-ups

Some people who manage websites choose to advertise using pop-ups. These pop-ups are limited to specific pages, so you can identify this type by reloading that page. When you do, you should get another set of them Exit Popup Software.

Spyware and Adware

Spyware is a term used to describe a piece of software to be installed locally on your computer, which is then used to send behavioral data to the company that created it. Adware is similar, except that the place to send information back is its purpose to push ads on your face. If you see pop-ups no matter which site you visit (for example, it does not use pop-ups), you are probably running an application on your computer without knowing that you are starting these annoying pop-ups.
