Micro Technology on a Chip

Several companies are using microtechnology in order to produce plastic disposable microfluidic devices for the pharmaceutical, diagnostic, medical and analytical industries. This technology has helped in developing specific solutions for customers involved in clinical chemistry, immunology, cell-based research or DNA analytic. The devices are not only fast but cost-effective too, starting from the idea of production.

A lab on a chip (LOC) device coagulates all the functions that can be performed in a laboratory onto an integrated circuit. The fluid volumes are very low. One of the most popular and prominent LOC devices that are readily available in the market is the pregnancy test kits that allow home testing. The device uses micro-fluid technology as the paper in the kit lets you check whether you are pregnant or not. LOC research has also been active in the diagnosis and treatment of HIV infections too.

History of LOCs

The gas chromatograph can be called the first LOC analysis system. By the 1990s, serious research on LOCs resulted in the inventions of micro-pumps, flow-sensors, and other fluid system analysis later on.  There was huge support extended by the defense forces as they were interested in the bio/ chemical warfare agent detection systems that could be carried anywhere. The basis for most labs on a chip in New York fabrication processes is photolithography. Earlier, silicon was used in the fabrication process.

Due to increased demand in terms of certain optical characteristics, chemical or biological compatibility, to lower production expenses and prototyping quickly, new processes have been fabricated in glass, ceramics, metal etching, processing and methods used in duplicating faster.

Micro-fluid devices such as PDMS were fabricated through a simple method of easy LOC prototyping. Lab on a chip in Massachusetts has superseded all the kinds of modern technologies that involve a compressed automated device. The goal of the LOC researchers is to create micro-fluid chips enabling the healthcare professionals to perform tests with no laboratory support, especially in clinics that are ill-equipped and poor.

Typical Advantages of LOC based on application in New York

  1. Usage of less volume of fluids, resulting in less waste and lesser sample volumes
  2. Quicker turnaround time and diagnosis due to fast heating and lesser volume
  3. Better processes control as the device responds quickly
  4. The device has been compacted to integrate numerous functionalities
  5. The compactness ends up in massive parallelization allowing high throughput analysis
  6. The production costs are low as they are fabricated in bulk quantities
  7. It is an automated device
  8. Chemical studies can be performed safely and accurately due to small fluid volumes

Global Health

LOC technology may soon become an important part of improving global health, particularly with the introduction of point-of-care testing devices. It may be the key to powerful new diagnostic instruments that can be used in developing or under-developed nations with few health care resources. The application of the concept lab on a chip in Boston is still novel and modest with a growing interest of companies in different fields such as analysis and synthetic chemistry.

Zepto Life Technology is providing automatic solutions in healthcare diagnostic tests with the introduction of lab-on-a-chip technology.
