Tips for Becoming the Best Motivator for Your Friends

Posted by Reebok on February 14th, 2020

As a dedicated gym-goer, you probably have friends who ask you all the time to help them put together a program to get them in shape. Especially during this first part of the year, your pals with resolutions are serious about making changes. That’s awesome news, but only if their dedication lasts. As you already know, results are about consistency, and getting in the gym regularly is about lacing up your cross-training black shoes even when you don’t feel like it. It’s your job to help them build the habit so they can discover their love for fitness.

Whether you’re a professional trainer or your friend wants you to help them get into the whole gym routine thing, here are some tips to help you be the best motivator you can be.

Help Them Set Clear Goals

Going to the gym just for the sake of being there is an okay first step, but without a clear goal, they’ll just be spinning their wheels. No matter how experienced they are, they need goals and a number attached to it as well. Whether they’re measuring weight loss, body fat percentage, strength or something else, having this goal gives them something to aim for.

Talk to them to understand why they're taking up an exercise regimen so you can show them how to achieve their goals. As time goes on, they might lose their excitement for the gym, but keep reminding them what they’re working for and it will put things back in perspective.

Find Ways to Make It Fun

For you, the gym is your playground. You have the most fun when you’re covered in sweat and out of breath. For newbies, there isn’t anything fun about holding a plank for a minute, so it’s your job to make it fun for them. If they’re competitive, make it a competition, even if it’s just pushing them to beat their last mile-time on the treadmill.

Or, you could venture outside of the gym and mix things up with a hike or a bike ride or go shopping for new workout outfits that will excite them to get back in the gym. Never underestimate the power that new sports bras or leggings can have on someone’s motivation.

Don’t Take Any Excuses, But Know When to Lighten Up

Although you’re their workout buddy first, sometimes all buddies have to dish out some tough love from time to time. It’s your job to hold them accountable and be that motivating coach who won’t let them back out of a workout because they stayed up too late the night before. For some of us, it can be tough and seem mean, but they’ll thank you for it later. However, you don’t want to go overboard and cause a big scene if they have a genuine excuse or reason to take a rest day.

Put yourself in their gym shoes—they’re new to the whole exercise thing, so what might seem like a light workout to you may be incredibly grueling for them. They don’t have that fire (yet) but they will eventually. So, go easy on them when necessary and be there to support them throughout their fitness journey.

Wrap Up

No matter how great we think are at motivating others, we could all use more practice. There’s a reason professional trainers take certification tests and attend classes to learn the latest training styles—because motivating and inspiring others is an evolving practice. There are always new methods, so take these tips and see how they can help you better motivate your friends to success.
