What is the reason for open enrollment period?

Open enrollment is the time when you, the consumer, can enroll in your plan. It is currently Nov. 1 through Dec. 15 for people who are not covered through their job, for individuals who are eligible for Medicaid and exchanges and for small business, self-employed, and unemployed people who are eligible for exchange plans.

Open enrollment is a period during which people can buy health insurance coverage for the upcoming year. The reason that there's a set amount of time each year for open enrollment is a socioeconomic one: It's to prevent people from only buying insurance when they're sick. Students must enroll during an open enrollment period so that financial aid can be applied to your first semester. The enrollment period runs from Monday, August 16 through Saturday, November 12. Open enrollment does not apply to students who choose to stay enrolled in January.

What can I expect during the open enrollment period?

Once you have enrolled, you can:

Apply for financial aid

Apply for food assistance, soup kitchens, emergency food pantries, clothing programs, college awareness, financial aid, and other resources that are part of U-M's Wisconsin Promise.

Search for UW-Madison specific housing

Create a MyPlan account and create your UMID (personal identification number) for The Marketplace requires people to enroll in a qualified health plan for an open enrollment period, from Jan. 1 to Dec. 15, 2018. There are special enrollment periods in 2018 for some major procedures like free or reduced-price preventive services, coverage for children, enrollment in the Marketplace for people aged 50 and older and exemption from medical underwriting.

How is the Obamacare application process different from the other Marketplace offerings?

The applications are mailed to you in the form of a personalized letter, or you may download and print the application. It tells you what you'll need to apply, how to fill it ou www.​mycontibenefits.​com and the deadlines. The application should tell you if you can re-enroll for additional periods There are several reasons. As of May 1, the main reasons are:

Employer sponsored coverage. Eligible enrollees at any time may enroll in a qualified health plan.

Reminder: If you do not have employer sponsored coverage, you will need to establish the eligibility of your family members as we continue to implement the Affordable Care Act.

Individuals who meet income eligibility requirements may also enroll in a qualified health plan. Learn more about individuals who may receive tax credits and how the premiums will be calculated if you enroll.
