So what kind of pair do you pick? Wedges with a cork base, stilettos in plain black or boots with a platform heel? We say give the mundane a miss for high heels that are truly works of art. The more embellished the pair, the better. This way, you can tone down the rest of your outfit and place the heel at centre stage.

ARTY TALK

Theatrics is the name of the high heel game. When Lady Gaga burst on the music scene with her flamboyant sense of fashion, she inspired many to add a dash of drama to their wardrobes. A crazy pair of pumps is the perfect touch, as it won't take the overall look overboard. The ten-inch psychedelic stilettos called the “armadillos” by many, created by Alexander McQueen and worn by Gaga in one of her music videos is a great example of show-stopping drama caused by heels.

The time and effort that goes into creating a spectacular piece makes it more a work of art than just an accessory. The designers also look for inspiration when sketching out the design, and they are inspired by everything from architectural buildings to dance forms. Christian Louboutin, the French designer known for his fantastic creations produced a pair of eight-inch heels inspired by ballet shoes and studded them with Swarovski crystals, which resemble a ballerina's en pointe (tip-toe stance). The latest collection from his design fold is the Bollywoody pump, inspired by the flamboyance of Bollywood. These pumps embellished with mirrors and embroidery were seen around the world in various colours and heel styles.

PRETTY POINTS

Some designers are keeping the rest of the shoe quite plain while spicing up the heel alone. The heel is a much ignored part of the shoe, but is now catching the eye of many fashionistas. A dressy heel is a great way to take your outfit up a notch. Mirrors, metal studs, spikes, sequins and colourful embroidery have found a place on suede, wood and leather heels. Gucci's peep-toe and open-toe suede pumps with cage heels (metal strips resembling bars surrounding the heel) and brass chain t-straps are a great mix of elegance and bling, with just a hint of metallic shine on the heel. The Exvota platform heel by Christian Louboutin has exotic images studded on the heel alone, with plain coloured straps above.

Indian designers are creating some wonderful pieces as well. Payal Kothari, a young designer who has apprenticed with top fashion brands and studied shoe-making in the Mecca of footwear production, Florence, created a collection inspired by the tribes of Africa for this year's Lakmé Fashion Week. Her label called Veruschka, available at Aza, produces some interesting pieces like the ‘Afar' shoe with a carved wooden heel and high collar in brightly coloured jute. The ‘Zulu' piece showcases a bright mix of teal and orange with zebra print on the heel, embellished with beadwork.

Learning how to produce these pointy pieces takes years of training. If you don't have the know-how but still want your shoes to be one-of-a-kind, why not go in for a bespoke pair of heels? Bespoke work is the ultimate definition of luxury in the fashion world and while men can get their suits made to order and perfectly fitting, most women did not have the option of getting designers to create unique pieces just for them alone. Now, you can at least create your own shoe, with some designers, including Kothari offering to customise heels as per your request. Here's the chance to let your imagination run wild. Colour, material, sequin and shine, the world of high heels is open to your interpretation.
