How to Deal with Sickness or Injury So It Doesn’t Derail Your Progress

Posted by Reebok on February 20th, 2020

Getting results in the gym is all about consistency over the course of weeks, months and years. It’s a never-ending chase, and when one goal is accomplished, another one quickly appears. This is part of the joy of working out in the first place, but things don’t always go according to plan.

While you ideally only miss the gym during your planned recovery days, things come up that can disrupt your progress either for the week or sideline you for months in severe cases. What can you do? Let’s take a look at some of the most common progress-killers people face, and what to do about them, so you don’t let yourself go or go off track.

Sickness

Every fall and winter, we all have to combat a range of illnesses ranging from the common cold to the flu. One day you’re feeling great, crushing it in the weight room and the next you wake up with a pounding headache and can hardly breathe. For the most part, it’s important to adopt the “lose the battle, win the war” mentality, and take a couple of days off until you feel close to 100% again. Sure, it’s not fun, but you could end up prolonging your sickness if you try to push through. Use this time to focus on your nutrition, stretch out and dedicate your energy to getting over your sickness first; the weights will be waiting for you when you’re better.

Minor and Major Injuries

Whether you felt it coming on and decided to push through or an injury happened out of nowhere, “toughing it out” will only make things worse. For specific guidance, you should consult with a sports trainer or physician, but in general, for minor injuries, it’s best to avoid working it for at least a few days with a focus on improving range of motion via stretching and active recovery. Or, you could try cross-training too and switch to a new sport that still breaks a sweat without touching your injury at all.

For major injuries, mental games come into play. For example, if you broke a bone in a bike accident, you’ll be on the mend, counting down the days until you can slip on your gym shorts and get back to the regular routine. That day will come, but until then, keep focusing on nutrition and working around your injury. You can also try taking your brain to the gym when your body can’t, reading books and learning more about health, nutrition or whatever interests you. It’s not ideal, but making progress in other areas is all you can do sometimes.

The Power of Patience

At the end of the day, getting over these disruptions is about having patience, listening to your bod, and finding positive outlets to help support your progress. Whether it’s signing up for a month of yoga classes or shopping for new workout clothes for men that you can rock once you’re back to 100%, use this time to focus on yourself and you’ll get through whatever you’re facing.
