The seven sister states make up the North-Eastern part of India. These states include Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Assam, Meghalaya, and Manipur. The North East is renowned for its incredible natural beauty, its rich biodiversity, unique wildlife, and vibrant culture. There’s a number of interesting sites to visit and explore in this region. Here are a few of them:

  • Umananda Temple : This is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva that can be found at the Peacock Island in the middle of the river Brahmaputra, near the Kachari Ghat of Guwahati. The Peacock Island boasts of being one of the smallest inhabited riverine islands on the planet. Devotees from around the country visit the Umananda Temple to pay their respects to Lord Shiva, as well as to take in the gorgeous natural beauty surrounding this temple.
  • Ujjayanta Palace : Constructed in 1901, the Ujjayanta Palace was traditionally the palace in the Kingdom of Tripura. This establishment has now been converted into a museum and is famed for housing a wide range of artefacts that beautifully showcases the lifestyle, art, tradition, and culture of the people residing in the communities of Northeast India.
  • Kaziranga National Park : Housing around two-thirds of the great one-horned rhinoceroses of the world, the Kaziranga National Park is a famous wildlife sanctuary and is regarded as a World Heritage Site as well. It is also the home to the highest density of tigers among protected areas across the globe.

The best time to visit the North East

The perfect time to book a tourism package for Guwahati, Kaziranga, Shillong or some other tourist site of North East India would be from October to mid-May. While these months are mostly dry in this region, it does witness an occasional shower. The North-Eastern part of India has a primarily subtropical climate, which is influenced by the Meghalaya plateau to the south, the Himalayas to the north, as well as the hills of Manipur, Mizoram, and Nagaland to its East.

Owing to its varied geography, the temperature between the diverse states of North East India also differs drastically, especially when it comes to the valleys of Assam and the hilly areas of Arunachal and Meghalaya. While the average temperature in January ideally is around 18°C in Assam, the states of Nagaland, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh may experience a sub-zero temperature. Coming to the summers, the temperature in the plains stays between 30 and 33 °C, while the hills experience around 15 to 20 °C.

From June to September, the North-East region of India witness monsoon. In these months, it typically rains heavily in almost all the states of the North East, in fact, some of them even get more than 10,000 mm of rain in a day. Hence, it won’t be a good idea to visit this region during the monsoon months.
