How to Engage and Reward Millennials in the Workplace

Posted by Successories on February 21st, 2020

It’s no secret that millennials tend to job-hop. As such, they are regularly labeled as unreliable and easily bored. It turns out this is because, according to a Gallup poll, only 29% of millennials are engaged at work, compared to the national average of 34%.

Disengaged workers are more likely to see new opportunities, which explains why millennials are job-hopping in such high numbers. This, however, begs the question: How do you engage and reward millennials in the workplace to keep them as employees? One easy way to increase engagement is to start an employee appreciation or reward program, with gifts for achievement and hard work. Keep the following corporate gifting tips in mind.

Provide Feedback

More than half of millennials cited the quality of their manager as extremely important when applying for a new job. One secret to a truly engaging and effective management style is providing clear and consistent feedback. Tell your employees how they are doing and how they can improve.

Don’t just focus on the negatives, either—celebrate successes and achievements with appreciation gifts. These show that you care enough to reward an employee and that you took the time to show your gratitude. It increases their engagement when they know you are trying to help them improve their skills and become better at their job.

Be Practical

Millennials don’t like “stuff.” They don’t want clutter or things that serve no function or purpose. If you are going to reward them, focus on something practical. Give them a phone charger or an external battery bank that they can use on the go. A tote bag or tumbler with an inspirational quote can be used outside of work, and each time they use it, they will remember the successes that earned them a reward from their manager. Other practical items such as stress relievers can give employees something to fidget with, while games are great for a brain break.

Practical doesn’t just mean rewards. Remember that, to keep them engaged, you need to give useful feedback that your millennial employees can act on. Vague feedback will be actively harmful and disengaging as it only serves to confuse your employees. Be clear and tell them what practical steps are needed to improve.

Tailor Your Gifts

How well do you know your employees? Do you know them well enough to choose a specific gift for them? There are a few critical elements to giving a millennial an appreciation gift. Relevancy, and as discussed, usability are important elements to millennials. If they love drinking coffee or tea, a company-branded mug may be a great fit for that employee. A playful employee might enjoy a small game or puzzle for their desk, while another employee may prefer something more practical like a cube of adhesive notes with a message of gratitude.

A millennial who is a manager and has their own office or a larger desk area will have room to proudly display executive gifts such as a custom company-branded clock or an award for success. In contrast, the average employee may not have space. Tailor your gifts to individual employees if possible, or to teams if not.
