How To Be A Better Runner?

Posted by Peter Barron on February 21st, 2020

The world of distance running can be a rather intimidating one for the uninitiated. The thought of endless miles pounding the pavement desperately trying to keep up with throngs of super-fit joggers is enough to give most distance running beginners nightmares.

But it needn’t be this way. According to Dubai-based distance runner, personal trainer and Instagram personality Peter Barron, everyone can get into running. Here, we ask the fitness adviser for his top tips on becoming a better runner.

Is It Possible To Be A Distance Runner Without The Skinny Physique?

Long-distance runners are traditionally thin because their main focus isn’t to build muscle – their focus is endurance. That being said, you can maintain size while building your cardiovascular fitness. I suggest you log everything and be consistent. Have a schedule with your runs and make sure you’re increasing your miles as well as your calories. Make sure you are getting into the gym for two to three weight sessions per week and as you increase your miles, you can decrease the volume in the gym so sets and reps will decrease.

Where Is Your Favorite Place To Work Out?

My workouts are broken up into running and resistance training. I run with Adidas Runners Dubai – it’s great to run as a group and have that sense of community. We have numerous runs in different locations around Dubai each week, which is also great for variety, but my favourite is Kite Beach. I recently joined the Fairmont The Palm and use their health club and gym – it’s one of the best I’ve ever trained in and it’s also great to be able to chill on the beach after a tough weight session.

What Kind Of Food Should We Eat While Training For A Distance-Running Event?

For me it is all about a balanced diet. This is very important to fuel your workout, prevent injury and to ensure your body recovers after each session. I would suggest vegetables and fruit rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, as well as lean protein sources, good sources of healthy fats and, of course, foods packed with quality carbohydrates. My number one food is salmon (an excellent source of omega 3 essential fatty acids and protein).

What Are The Essential Piece Of Kit Every Runner Should Have?

For me this is a no brainer: Adidas Ultraboost runners. If you haven’t run in them before, put them on your feet and watch all-around comfort and performance improve instantly.

What Else Do You Do Apart From Running?

At the moment I am training at Gravity Calisthenics in Al Quoz, which is a bodyweight style of working out based around stability and balance. I have also recently been using PRAMA, by Pavigym in Fairmont The Palm, which is an interactive LED-based workout that works on coordination, balance, strength, speed, agility and flexibility. This is great if you are training for any sport or just looking to get fit.

Have You Got A Favourite Event That You Love To Take Part In?

I like to take part in any 5km, 10km or half marathon races that take place in Dubai. But more so, events with Adidas runners are great, because for me running with a group is more enjoyable – it’s good to hear other people’s stories, why they run and what motivates them.

What Is Your Advice For Beginners Who Want To Get Into Running?

Running is a workout for both the mind and the body. Everyone was once a beginner. Don’t worry about what other people are doing and enjoy each run.
