What is arthroscopy?

Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure that facilitates doctors to have a clear inside view of joints to diagnose and treat problems. It is performed using a small instrument called an arthroscope that is fitted with a camera.
Through a small incision, surgeon inserts arthroscope, a narrow tube attached with a fiber-optic video camera that transmits inside view of the joint to a high definition video monitor rather than looking through the incision. Arthroscopy allows a surgeon in determining the type of injury, extent of damage and help repair the problem.
Arthroscopy is recommended when joint is inflamed, injured or damaged. Patients having stiffness and persistent joint pain are often recommended an arthroscopy. Diagnostic arthroscopic surgery is performed when the X- rays and bone scanning examinations, like MRI or CT, do not provide a conclusive diagnosis.
Arthroscopy Surgery is usually performed on outpatient cases and eliminates the need of hospitalization and patients can go home the same day.
The types of arthroscopic procedures performed include:

• Knee arthroscopy
• Shoulder arthroscopy
• Hip arthroscopy
• Ankle arthroscopy
• Elbow arthroscopy
• Wrist arthroscopy

For what diseases or conditions is arthroscopy considered?

Conditions that are treated with arthroscopy include:

• Loose bone fragments in joints
• Damaged or torn cartilage in joints
• Inflamed joint linings – including lining of synovium in the knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist or ankle
• Torn ligament
• Repair or resection of torn cartilage (Meniscus) from knee or shoulder
• Reconstruction of anterior cruciate ligament in knee
• Scarring within joints
• Removal of loose bone and/or cartilage pieces, particularly in the knee, shoulder, elbow, ankle or wrist
• Injuries - such as:

 - Rotator cuff tendon tears

 - Impingement syndrome (a common shoulder condition)

 - Recurrent dislocations in the shoulder

 - Meniscal (cartilage) tears

 - Chondromalacia – excessive wearing or injury of the cartilage cushion
 - Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears with instability in the knee

 - Carpal tunnel syndrome in the wrist

What are potential complications of arthroscopy?

Although Arthroscopy is a safe and low risk surgery; may cause complications following a knee arthroscopy.
The potential complications of Arthroscopy include:
• Infection
• Thrombophlebitis - Clots in a vein
• Artery damage
• Nerve damage
• Excessive bleeding - Hemorrhage
• Allergic reaction due to anesthesia
• Numbness at incision sites
• Ongoing pain in calf and foot.

How long is the recovery time after arthroscopy?

Being a minimally invasive surgery, not only Arthroscopy requires small incisions but also causes minimal damage to soft-tissues, muscle, ligaments and structures that surround the joint.
In addition, trauma to the joint, bleeding, swelling and inflammation are also minimized. As compared to open surgical procedure, recovery is faster with an arthroscopic procedure. Arthroscopy is traumatic to the body and need to be properly treated. If not managed, it can cause an increase in pain, stiffness, and swelling.
Pain management with NSAIDs, physiotherapy for rehabilitation and gradual increase in activities following Arthroscopy will ensure faster recovery. Although stitches will be removed in 1-2 weeks; full recovery of joint, depending upon extent of damage, may take several weeks.

What precaution I have to take after Arthroscopy surgery?

After Arthroscopic surgery, you will have to care for dressing of wound and refrain from excessive activity.
You must take prescribe medication to relieve pain and inflammation and follow R.I.C.E. i.e. Rest, Ice, Compress and Elevate the joint for several days to reduce swelling and pain of joint. You will require physiotherapy and exercises for rehabilitation of joint and speed-up your recovery.
