How to choose a toothpaste

Posted by Harvey Webb on February 23rd, 2020

The dental aisle in the supermarket is bombarded by dental products, the latest toothbrushes, new flavours of toothpastes, stronger floss and other interdental gagdets . It can be overwhelming to choose a suitable product specific for your needs without any form of guidance. Take into consideration these criteria when choosing your next toothpaste.

Fluoride

Firstly and most importantly, ensure that your chosen toothpaste contains fluoride. Fluoride is the strengthening agent in toothpaste which prevents decay. There are a lot of natural & herbal toothpastes readily available which do not offer any protection against decay.

Fluoride concentration

Generally , adult toothpastes are 1000ppm (0.22%) in Fluoride concentration whilst childrens’ toothpaste range from 400 – 600ppm (0.10% -0.11%) . These concentrations have been studied to be deemed as safe whilst offering protective benefits. When children start developing adult teeth, (usually between the ages of 6-7), they can start using adult toothpaste but always check with your dental professional.

Other considerations

Sometimes normal toothpaste does not suffice the daily needs of an individual. Some may experience sensitivity, rapid decay and/or dry mouth. Sensitive toothpastes contain a higher Fluoride concentration combined with other (safe) ions to help alleviate symptoms. Your dental professional may recommend a stronger fluoridated toothpaste e.g Neutrofluoro 5000 (which is 5x stronger than the average adult toothpaste) to combat high decay levels. Several medications can also impact the mouth, causing discomfort from dryness or irritation to the soft tissues (i.e gums, lips and cheeks). The Biotene range can aid in reducing uncomfortable symptoms through their low foaming action & special formulations.

Choosing the correct toothpaste does not have to be a difficult task. Always ask your dental professional if you are unsure, or have further questions.
