There are several types of flanges, made of different materials, to meet the needs of threaded flanges and carbon steel pipe fittings and flanges to be welded in materials as adequately as possible :

  • steel alloys.

Main types of flanges:

  1. Different types of flanged joint faces

Flanged joints can have three types of standard faces used for industrial WPHY 52 piping.

Types of standard flange seal faces:

  • -Flat face seal, for low-pressure pipes (permissible operating pressure = 10 bars approximately (10 kg / cm 2 ).
  • Male and female joints for pipes undergoing an operating pressure of approximately 20 bars (10 kg/cm 2 ). Connecting the faces allows automatic alignment. They are also very suitable for intermediate pressure services.
  • Ring seal, most suitable for high temperatures and pressures. This type of seal aligns automatically and is reusable unless damaged. The ring seal is normally made of mild steel, but it is also available in other materials.

For several years now, the majority of factories that have piping systems subjected to high pressures and high temperatures have used the semi-metallic seal, which is shown in the following figure.

Types of semi-metallic seals:

This type of seal, recognized for its effectiveness, is very popular with users. It consists of a series of circular stainless steel strips, in the shape of a “V,” into which metals like asbestos, flexible graphite, etc. are inserted. These metals create sealing by their expansion and also offer excellent flexibility.

The most used materials are rubber, asbestos, and Teflon.

  1. Assembly of a flange joint

The 316 Stainless Steel Flanges joints are assembled by joining the flanges with bolts. First, clean the faces of the flanges before inserting the sealing washer. We must then check the alignment of the pipes and flanges, both horizontally and vertically, to obtain a perfect seal.
