Posted by jimray on February 25th, 2020

Some jobs are better than others, and being a mechanical engineer is on the top of that list.

Every bigger or even smaller industrial and architectural project needs a material engineer. Simply said, a material engineer spends work hours working with the building blocks of modern engineering.

So, if you want to know what a material engineer does and how to become one, read on. You wouldn't be here if you weren't interested in earning a nourishing engineer salary. That being said, read on.

Material Engineer Job Description In A Nutshell

People tend to miss to do proper research and know what precisely this dynamic job is. Luckily, we have done it for you.

This is what a mechanical engineer does on a daily level:

  • Develops, process, and test various materials to create new products

  • A mechanical engineer is responsible for creating smaller parts like computer chips, to large items, such as aircraft wings.

  • Mechanical engineer study different structures of metals, including plastics, ceramics, composites, and even nanomaterials.

  • Works closely with other engineers and managers to plan and evaluate new projects.

  • Supervise the collective work of technicians.

  • Monitor how materials reach.

  • Evaluate materials and their impact.

However, they are not limited only to the listed requirements.

Their JD (job description) can vary from industry to industry. Still, listed traits are general specifications.

They usually work in an office, on the computer, and spend the majority of their time designing equipment.

Did you know that the average mechanical engineer salary is around ,390?

The best thing about this job is that its always in demand. According to the latest research, there will be no drop in this profession in the next ten years.

Most mechanical engineers are busy working in various industries, more traditional ones such as aerospace manufacturing.

However, with the rise of the machines and faster production, they will still be in high demand.

But… How To Become A Material Engineer?

The perfect step will be if you are passionate about creating new things. It would help if you were result-driven and ready to learn and evolve with each passing day.

That being said, the next logical step is to know various materials, or at least to be interested in learning about them.

For example, did you know that 34CrNiMo6 engineering steel does not show tempering brittleness, while it's usually delivered in hot-rolled, peeled and drawn bars? On the other hand, 40NiCrMo7 engineering steel is tough to weld, or that it should be heated to suitable temperatures when cutting with gas and plasma?

The thing is that every material comes with specific characteristics, and you need to master them to provide proper formation for creating new items.

So, do you need particular skills, next to material-interest, to become a material engineer? Of course.

Let's check the mandatory skills and requirements.

Material Engineer Skills And Requirements

You will need the right education first.

It's expected that you are a high school graduate and that you have a bachelor's degree in materials engineering.

It would be perfect if you could get a degree from a school authorized by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). You will also need a license. Find details on the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) website.

Once you have all the documents, it's time for you to start working. Gain initial work experience, which is one to four years, and if needed earn a Master's Degree in materials engineering.

Most importantly, make sure that you have relevant experience. If necessary, think about volunteering as a material engineer. This will bring you practice and valuable work experience.

Moreover, you will get to meet people from your area, and as you probably know, it's always handy to know the right people.
