Seeking solutions to water woes this monsoon season

Spring and autumn have vanished due to global warming and we are thankful that we still have the access to the season of monsoon, but who knows what might happen next since the temperature and pollution are increasing and no-one knows what turn it might take. Every monsoon season means saving of rainwater and have the proper resources of groundwater. But that is not enough; India needs to preserve every single drop with better and advanced planning and construction.

Several cities in India have ended up destroyed and dead because of drought and we believe it is about to threaten the rest of the country any time soon. Wettest place on the earth, Cherrapunji too faced drought in the recent winter years whereas a green and environment-friendly city like Kerala suffered from of the deadliest floods in the history. What has the world become? And the main question is how does it under control?

According to sources, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister  Edappadi K. Palaniswami, who also belongs to All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has set up a plant in the state which will be able to provide 150 million liters of water to every single citizen of Chennai even the opposition party has launched the motivation to create thousands of rain water harvesting structures which will provide clean water for the citizens.

The North-eastern government also is focusing on how to clear the obstruction and clear the monsoon in the states. Prime Minister Narendra Modi too has started focusing on the issue of monsoon destructions and is targeting to the ways of balancing the nature back to its normal form, or at least to a ‘less destructive’ form.

Already India’s more than one-third of the population, i.e. 1.2 billion people and 11 states have suffered the continuous insufficiency of rainwater. Crops and animals have died causing more than thousands of farmers committing suicide every year. Even though the government has spent near about 1.5 billion dollars for the droughts, the lives that have ended cannot be brought back and there has to be a permanent solution for balancing and providing every single one with the right amount of rain.

India, within the span of 10 years has experienced different variations of rainfalls which mostly destroyed the lives of several people and have caused damage to the cultivable lands. Though sources like groundwater, rain-water harvesting, digging lands to make ponds, and etc have been helping a lot for dealing with water scarcity and drought caused in few places.

Many Residential Properties in the many cities are given strict orders to follow the rain water harvesting. So as to accommodate the cities drinking and many other needs. This has brought some changes in the water maintenance in the city which is coping the requirements of the people living. Many upcoming projects are been advised to follow the Muncipality rules for rain water harvesting. Provident Woodfield is an upcoming residential plotted development in Electronic city phase 1, with a 20 acres land parcel,  the rain water and sewage treatment plants have been under development to accommodate the future residents of this projects.

Recently, Umakant Umrao, a trained civil engineer and the former district official has been able to convince the farmers to offer a piece of their own lands to themselves and dig it for ultimately making a pond for themselves. Several farmers thought this idea to be very helpful and thus, a lot of problems has solved for them since then.  “When I came here, all I heard from people were stories about lack of water, about how water was brought here by train and how this is essentially an arid, difficult area," said Umakant Umrao in an interview. This plan has turned out to be a huge success and as we mentioned, has solved a lot of farmers’ problems.

Since out of 120 days of the season, India only gets 40- 60 days of rain showers, villagers and farmers have realized that saving the rainwater within those days can solve few of the major water crisis, as Shashi Shekhar, the secretary of Ministry of Water resources says that man built water resources safeguard the water bodies.
