Smoking is harmful to the health levels and according to a new oral health study; nicotine stimulates the growth of bacteria in the mouth that cause cavities.

The study used different strains of the type of Streptococcus mutans bacteria which are closely related to the formation of dental caries, exposing them to different amounts of nicotine and as a result an increase of S. mutans was obtained, therefore smokers have a higher risk of developing caries.
