Electronic Cigarette: A Safer Alternative for Smokers

Posted by electroniccigarettesshop on July 5th, 2012

Smoking is a combination of a physical and chemical addiction to nicotine. Studies show that almost 6 million smokers made a resolution this New Year’s to quit smoking in UK. Even though most of them are bound to fail, the NHS and other anti-smoking groups have registered a huge increase in the number of people trying to quit.

The third division

The studies show that there are no longer just two divisions, nicotine smokers and non-smokers. There is a third group, the electronic cigarette smokers. Electronic cigarettes are one of the alternatives to smoking an actual cigarette. Apart from nicotine gums, patches and tablets, these cigs have joined the group of harm-reductive tools in smoking.

Studies show that after 6 months of using e-cigarettes, more than half of the hardcore smokers used as a sample, cut down their cigarette usage by 50% and a quarter of them had quit regular cigarettes for life.

The people who smoke are of divided opinion on e-cigarettes. Some of them claim to feel ridiculous while smoking them; most others consider it to be the best alternative to smoking.

Nicotine is as harmless as caffeine

These cigarettes contain nicotine-infused water which is inhaled as a vapour but do not contain tobacco. Pure nicotine isn’t harmful unlike tobacco, but is highly addictive. Tony Jones, the director of 10 Motives, an e-cigarette brand, said that e-cigarettes satisfy a smoker’s addiction without adversely affecting him.

The cigarette provides nicotine, which is considered to be as harmless as caffeine and also fulfils the smoker’s desire to draw in smoke. Jones considers these cigarettes to be an upside in smoking without having to face the downsides.

Since these e cigarettes deliver a drug and contain nicotine, critics feel that these cigarettes should be considered a medicine and should also be approved by the Medicine and Health products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). Also, these cigarettes cannot be called nicotine replacement therapy in the UK.

But Jones disagrees and says that they shouldn’t be called as medicines and they are extremely safe to use. What his industry is lacking is the ability to market the product as a smoking cessation tool.

An e-cigarette usually contains about 16-18mg of nicotine infused per gram of the atomized liquid. Heavy smokers find this to be very strong even though it is much lesser than the amount in a regular cigarette. This way, a smoker gets just enough to finish the lit cigarette.

2013 is when the MHRA will give their final decision on e-cigarettes and how they will be regulated. Meanwhile, the sale rates of e-cigarettes have increased and big names in the tobacco industry are planning to release these devices.
