Eye Cornea Transplant

In today’s scenario, organ donation has catered numerous patients live a quality life and is known to be the greatest legacy one can ever leave behind. Organ transplantation has been a great source of relief for most patients and has provided great hope to live a life of comfort thereafter. Like other organ transplants, Eye Cornea Transplant in India has saved many critical lives from eye diseases and other eye-related problems that cause blur or unclear vision.

The Cornea Transplant (also known as Keratoplasty) is a surgical method to graft the transparent layer in front of the eye, called as cornea so that the patient’s ability to view things becomes crystal clear. The Corneal Transplant is done in either of the two ways available. One of them being, accepting the Cornea from a deceased donor and the other being, accepting the Cornea from a living donor. In both circumstances, the donor must be free from eye disease.

Top Reasons for Cornea Transplant

Today, everyone right from the eldest to the youngest everyone is using electronic gadgets. These gadgets release ultra-violet rays that are harmful to our delicate eye. These sensitive UV rays reach our eye (the transparent layer - Cornea in particular), causing a distorted, blur and unclear sight. One of the major reasons why a person would need a Cornea Transplant maybe this. Other reasons may include infections and inflammation of the eyes, thinning of the cornea or due to Fuch’s dystrophy.

  • Infections and inflammation of the eyes: A weakened immune system, wearing contact lenses, eye rubbing, all of these causes infection to our eyes. Mostly, people make use of contact lenses. These contact lenses, if not cleaned regularly, changed as per schedule or taken off appropriately, may cause irritation and inflammation of the eyes.
  • Thinning of the Cornea: The function of the cornea is to focus the light of the eye. However, if the cornea thins and bulges out, a condition called Keratoconus may be on the cards. Keratoconus leads to blurry eyesight which may disable the quality of reading a book, typing on a computer or a phone, or even driving a car. This change in the shape of the cornea may cause thinning which may be required to get a Cornea Transplant done.
  • Fuch’s dystrophy: One of the other reason for Cornea Transplant maybe this. Fuch’s dystrophy is a chronic medical condition in which the endothelial layer wears out or dies off. This endothelial layer of the cornea produces a fluid that keeps the vision clear. Unfortunately, if the cells fail to produce this fluid, it may cause a patient’s vision to be hazy or blurry. This medical condition usually occurs in people who have crossed their middle age. With Fuch’s dystrophy, the cornea transplant/replacement keeps the endothelial layer intact, leading to an improvement in vision.

After Operative Care

Until the top layer of the patient's cornea heals, he/she may probably wear an eye patch for at least a day or even more. After the surgery, the operated eye is quite sensitive to the light, which may cause sore or feel hurt. Some people may recover soon or later depending upon the operation they undergo. Eye drops and medicines are prescribed by the surgeon to overcome inflammation and chances of infection. The patient may be discharged soon after the operation or might be required to stay overnight.
