The Root Cause Of Alzheimer’s As Known For Now

Neurodegenerative diseases are still a realm of limited knowledge and hence the causes for the same are yet relatively unknown. But with people of almost all age groups getting afflicted by neurodegenerative diseases, especially Alzheimer’s, it becomes imperative for people to know whatever little is known about the same.

Thus even though scientists are yet to understand the exact Alzheimers disease causes,  it can be safely said that this progressive neurodegenerative disease is caused by a combination of several factors like:

Changes in the brain brought about by ageing: While it is true that not everyone who is old suffers from Alzheimer’s, statistics say that the number of people suffering from this disease becomes almost double for every 5 year age gap after 65years. Age-related causes for the same are said to occur from the:

Shrinking or atrophy of certain relevant parts of the brain,

Inflammation of the brain,

Vascular damage restricting the supply of blood to parts of the brain,

Increased production of unstable free radicals,

Reduction of the production of ATP or energy within the cells.

Brain foods like axona, bring about some relief here since they aim to supply an alternative source of energy to the brain in the form of the ketone.

Genetic factors: There have indeed been instances where Alzheimer’s has been found to run in the family. But this cannot prove for a fact that if a person has a family history of Alzheimer’s, he is going to develop the same. It, however, proves that he has a higher chance of developing the sickness. This is because both the form of Alzheimer’s has been found to have a genetic connection.

Environmental, general health and lifestyle: These are 3 factors which have been found to have a certain influence on the onset of Alzheimer’s. It becomes necessary for people to stay healthy as they age. It has been seen that certain lifestyle habits have some connection with the reduction in the risk of developing Alzheimer’s. These habits pertain to:

Switching to a more nutritious diet,

Engaging in physical activities,

Social engagement,

Proper sleep habits and

Incorporation of mentally stimulating activities and pursuits.

Thus it would not be wrong to say that following an unhealthy lifestyle with no mental and physical exercise is one of the Alzheimer's disease causes.

However, these causes are not universal and thus differ from person to person. It is, however, a fact that all or any of the above-mentioned factors lead to certain changes in the brain. These changes generally result in the loss of neurons which ultimately leads to a gap in their connectivity. This eventually affects a person’s rational mind and there comes a time when they become incapable of living independently. However, today, with the introduction of brain foods like axona, it has become possible to bring about a delay in the progression of Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s result in the degeneration of brain cells and this change is irreversible. Hence as yet Alzheimer’s cannot be cured but its onset and progression can be delayed.
