4 Best Transmissions Ever Offered in American Cars

In a manner where some specific engines have earned great respect over time, some factory transmissions have also become legendary and desirable and revered by many American auto experts. In this article, we have prepared a list of what we think are the 7 best factory transmissions ever made for American cars. In this list, we did some necessary omissions to make the list short and worth your time. But these are notable mentions — Powerglide (a popular drag racing transmission) and T5 are not on the list either, nor is the Super T-10.

Below is the list (not in any specific order) of the 4 best transmissions ever offered in American vehicles.

1. The Ford C6 – Even if the C4 was manufactured in larger numbers, the C6 was designed to take control or handle the power of the biggest and most powerful Ford engines produced during the 1970s and has continued to exist, although in a fairly modern and modified form. It can be seen behind diesel trucks and many other heavy-duty vehicles. The C6 was rolled out in the year 1966 and this Ford auto transmission was introduced as a replacement for Ford’s MX transmission which automobile engineers wanted to enhance upon.

2. The TH400 – This incredible drive-line component was introduced in the early 60s along with the introduction of GM’s Turbo 400 transmission line. The three-speed automatic system was built to be a heavy-duty component and was the largest RWD automatic transmission in the GM family for a very long time. In raw form, this can handle the power of about 500 lb/ft of torque.

3. The Borg-Warner T56 – The box that gave six gears to the American masses deserves a spot in this list, even though it has a bad reputation, thanks to the drag strip violence since its inception in 1992. The T56 was designed by Borg-Warner (hence the name) for Chrysler as the factory transmission for the then Dodge Viper. It quickly got the right attention and GM used it for the Camaro and later in Corvettes.

4. The Ford Toploader – In the empire of invincible four-speed manual transmissions, the iconic Ford Toploader certainly is an uncommon beast. Right from 1964 till 1973, it was the transmission that fueled everything from high winding 302ci compact blocks through the thundering 427, 429, and 429ci large blocks.
