Logistics and Material Handling Tools for Every Part of the Brewing Process

Posted by Magliner on March 5th, 2020

The craft brewing industry is blowing up. There are more breweries in the U.S. than ever before. In 2015, the number of breweries in the U.S. reached 4,144. As of 2018, there were 7,450 breweries in the U.S. All of that beer being brewed is, of course, a wonderful thing, but it’s an industry that requires a lot of work. No brewery exists that wasn’t built on a lot of heavy lifting, making having the right tools for the trade exceedingly important for every step in the brewing process. Sometimes those tools are as simple as a reliable 2 wheel dolly.

Transportation of the Initial Ingredients

The first stage of beer brewing requires the transportation of the foundational ingredients. Brewing recipes and styles can differ, but they are virtually all going to require barley and other grains, malt, yeast, sugar, and hops. Those ingredients aren’t light in large quantities. As the form in which they’re transported varies, but often involves large bags or sacks, it’s wise to choose material handling equipment that allows for variety. Specifically, a collapsible hand truck. Also known as a convertible hand truck, they are beneficial for brewers because they can be used in both the traditional vertical orientation and a horizontal one. When “collapsed” down into the horizontal position, they offer considerably more platform space. That’s good news when a brewer has to move a half dozen hefty sacks of grain and sugar.

Transportation of Liquids

That sturdy, reliable 2 wheel dolly or hand truck is definitely going to pay off when it comes to transporting containers of liquid. Fluids are heavy, and necessarily brewers are going to be moving water, wort, sometimes pre-hopped malt syrup or corn syrup, and definitely cleaning and sanitation chemicals like bleach and iodine solution. Moving containers full of heavy liquids is always going to be a whole lot easier when they can be supported by a good-quality hand truck.

Transportation of Kegs and Bottles

Whether they’re empty or full, kegs can be very difficult to transport. Lifting them by hand is simply asking for a strain injury and increases the risk of accidents. Rolling kegs along the ground can seem tempting but can damage the kegs, jostle the beer, and obviously isn’t possible up and down stairs. Thankfully, there’s an excellent solution. The material handling stalwart Magline is a friend to the brewing industry, and to that end, they have produced a keg handling hand truck. It is specifically designed to more safely, comfortably, and securely fit kegs, making transport a snap. When it comes to bottling, transportation, and distribution, the equipment necessary depends on the size of the operation. For smaller outfits, the traditional or collapsible hand truck should do the trick. For larger operations, look into pallet jacks, walk-behind forklifts, and forklift trucks to get the job done.
