These two pieces of clothing are essentially known as “rehearsal dresses”, but they are often used as actual costume pieces either together or separately during actual performances as well. The purpose of rehearsal blacks is to create a neutral canvas for the artist so that the actor can truly embody the character without having their personal preferences, and can thus focus entirely on their performance without having to worry about their clothing.

The shirt for a drama class can be button-down or a long-sleeve one, whereas, the pants usually depend on the preference of the teacher or the director. As a pro tip, this is a basic costume item and should go without any visible logos or any extravagant designs.

A crisp white shirt apart from being a great drama costume also serves various other purposes, such as, it is great for portraying a business person, a server in the restaurant, or simply as a shirt under a suit for any formal occasion. Therefore, a long-sleeved white shirt is a must in every person’s wardrobe, but make sure it is clean and properly ironed.

Appropriate Underclothes

For the gentleman, a plain white t-shirt or undershirt and neutral-colored boxer shorts are appropriate. But, for the ladies, a bandeau, undershirt, neutral-colored dance or yoga shirts are more of a necessity than a choice. Usually, the black shots are the easiest to acquire and they pretty much go with almost all the dresses, but, in case the student’s costume is light-colored then black will have to be avoided.

A Plain Leather Belt

The belt can be either black or brown depending on the rest of the costume. A belt is always a necessary part of a drama dress as it helps secure the drama pants in place.

Plain Black Dress Shoes

In the case of black shoes, the options differ greatly. For the gentleman, lace-up shoes are probably the most versatile option, while slip-on or shoes with buckles are rather show-specific. Alternatively, the boys must not forget to pair the shoes with a pair of long plain black dress socks, the socks too must match the shoes, and they need to be specifically tall to avoid bare ankles.

For the ladies, the “character shoes” are an absolute necessity, these are flexible, heeled dance shoes with straps, and they are usually black or tan in color. In the case of younger students or the shows where lot of movements are involved, it is highly advisable to opt for black slip-on jazz shoes or black tennis-style shoes.
