Shantha Rangaswamy wants Harmanpreet to review her captaincy

Shantha Rangaswamy, former India captain feels Harmanpreet Kaur should review herself as a skipper now. She thinks that the team needs Harman the batter rather than a leader presently.

Australia defeated India by 85 runs in the T20 World Cup final 2020. Indians were crushed by them as none of the players could deliver according to the situation. Speaking about the same Rangaswamy said, “I am very disappointed that such high caliber batters like Smriti [Mandhana], Jemimah [Rodrigues], Harmanpreet [Kaur] did not click at all. It was a consistent failure of Harman, Smriti, Jemimah and Veda [Krishnamurthy].”

But the veteran did not forget to applaud Shafali for her contributions throughout the tournament. She explained to PTI, “Shafali was the only one who made significant contributions while the others just chipped in which is not good enough to win a world title.”

Rangaswamy on Harman’s captaincy

Harmanpreet Kaur had a terrible tournament as a batter too. Hers scores in the tournament read 4,15,1,8, and 2. It was under her leadership that India had faced defeat in the 2018 semi-finals in West Indies. This time India did not have to play the semi-final and because of their group stage performance they directly went to the final after the washed-out semi-final.

The performance of Harmanpreet was being criticised throughout and the loss in the final made the thing more significant. Her captaincy is also under radar. While asked about the same, Rangaswamy suggested her to review her captaincy and rated her as a better batter than captain.

“I am sure she will know when to give up captaincy and it is time for her review her captaincy. She is a mature person because she definitely is needed in the team much more as a batter than captain, especially in T20s. It is worth pondering over. With new selectors, new think tank coming in after the World Cup [this can be reviewed].”
