Movie Review (Synopsis):

The three Bondurant brothers run a bootlegging operation during the depression, up in the mountains of Franklin County, Virginia. Crooked Special Deputy Charles Rakes is after a share of the brothers' profits. Compounding their troubles, the local competition is elbowing in on their activities. Forrest's boisterous defiance and Cricket's knack for moonshine production help the brothers gain a local monopoly. When Forrest is wounded as tension with Rakes escalates, Jack, initially the timid one, must prove his worth against gangster Floyd Banner's mob, and we see him metamorphose into a cocky exhibitionist in his attempts to woo the off-limits preacher's daughter, Bertha.

Lawless is a handsome-looking film, with a reasonably winning lead performance from Shia LaBeouf. But it's basically a smug, empty exercise in macho-sentimental violence in which we are apparently expected to root for the lovable good ol' boys, as they mumble, shoot, punch and stab. Our heroes manage to ensnare the affections of preposterously exquisite young women, and the final flurry of self-adoring nostalgia is borderline-nauseating.

Tom Hardy plays Forrest Bondurant, a great impassive lunk of a man: tough, grizzled, though with Hardy's weirdly sensuous lips. He is feared and respected for the unhesitating brutality with which he protects his bootlegging business. Jason Clarke plays Howard Bondurant, his more obviously crazy hillbilly brother, given to getting high on his own supply, and to alerting Forrest to cop raids by flinging back his head and howling like a dog. And lastly, there is nervous, quick-witted young Jack Bondurant, nicely played by LaBeouf, touchy about the fact that he is not as tough as his siblings, and eager to prove himself. The brothers run a kind of roadhouse-cum-gas-station very like the kind of establishment you see at the beginning of scary movies — and entertainingly portrayed in Joss Whedon's The Cabin In The Woods.

Transformers star Shia LeBeouf, British actor Tom Hardy and Australian Jason Clarke (no, me neither) are the Bondurant brothers, moonshiners in Franklin County trying to protect their flourishing operation from a puritanical clampdown spearheaded by a Special Deputy named Rakes, a part played with a memorable fury and dandyish fuss by Guy Pearce.

The inclusion of Pearce in the cast hints that the film wants to be taken as the new LA Confidential but despite its spurts of blood, gangsters and corrupt cops, Lawless never quite succeeds at building convincing portraits of its characters nor its setting. Based on a memoir, The Wettest County in the World by Matt Bondurant, writing about his real grandfather, the script is adapted by musician Nick Cave but, unlike the whisky stills which chug away in the woodsheds, it takes its time to build up steam.

Hillcoats puts it all together capably enough, but the supposed heroism and stoicism of alpha-bro Forrest, as he refuses point-blank to pay off the corrupt feds, is pretty ridiculous and suspect. As with all movies "based on a true story", you wonder what the true story actually is. The final credits disclose that all this was known as the "Franklin County Conspiracy". We are asked to believe that the Bondurant brothers did not need to conspire to survive. I wonder.

The violence is gruesome, and perpetual, with a particularly horrible tar-and-feather scene — and yet nothing somehow seems to be at stake for anyone, and the brutality seems to be there simply to underline how tough and real it all is. Tom Hardy deploys his stolid screen presence, and Gary Oldman has an interesting, but all too brief cameo appearance as the gangster of whom everyone is in awe. But the whole thing adds up to nothing at all, and leaves nothing behind but a nasty moonshine hangover.

Lawless does heat up after an hour or so, when Shia Lebeouf's Jack Bondurant starts selling liquor to gangster Floyd Banner (played with steely style by Gary Oldman, albeit too briefly) and the net of the law tightens around the brothers.

But ultimately it's the violent images that linger: a man tarred and feathered and dumped on the porch; Tom Hardy's throat being slit; Oldman whacking Noah Taylor with a shovel; and Pearce sneering in disgust as he gets blood on his lilac leather gloves after pummelling Shia Lebeouf's face.

Australian-born director Hillcoat last teamed with Nick Cave on the Outback western The Proposition, which also dripped with violence and centred on outlaw brothers. However that 2005 film had a lean sense of purpose and was ripe with surprises.

Lawless is the true story of the infamous Bondurant Brothers: bootlegging siblings who made a run for the American Dream in Prohibition-era Virginia. In this epic gangster tale, inspired by true-life tales of author Matt Bondurant’s family in his novel “The Wettest County In The World”, the loyalty of three brothers is put to the test against the backdrop of the nation’s most notorious crime wave.

Lawless marks the second collaboration between musician/screenwriter Nick Cave and director John Hillcoat (The Road) after The Proposition – and reunites the pair with the star of that grisly western, Guy Pearce, along with a who’s who of respectable names like Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska, Dane DeHaan and Jason Clarke.

The trailer for Lawless makes the film look like a mixture of elements borrowed from Michael Mann’s Public Enemies and HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, with some western (Virginian?) seasoning added for good measure. Combine that with a storyline chock-full of classic crime genre themes about family loyalty and the fine line between outlaws and heroes – along with what appear to be excellent performances (and accents) all around, even from the not-always-dependable LaBeouf – and this new footage has only heightened our anticipation for Lawless.

The leading ladies of the picture are played by Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska. Chastain's Maggie is running from the big city life where she was a dancer and winds up on the Bondurants' doorstep looking for the quieter life. While she clearly went looking in the wrong place, she did find some much needed protection. Wasikowska's Bertha Minnix is a preacher's daughter that has caught Jack's eye and while her father won't hear of them being together that doesn't stop the pursuit.
