Movie Review (Synopsis):
The reserved Lauren and the irrepressible Katie are polar opposites... and past enemies. But when both come up short on the funds needed to afford their dream New York City apartment a mutual friend re-introduces them and they reluctantly agree to room together. These apartment-mates have nothing in common - until Lauren discovers that Katie is working as a phone-sex operator, and recognizes a good business opportunity. But as their business partnership takes off, their newfound friendship finds unexpected challenges that may leave them both, as they say, hanging on the telephone.

Lauren and Katie, college frenemies with a mutual good friend, move in together at age 28 in order to afford an amazing Gramercy Park apartment. The unlikely pair start a phone sex line and become best friends while learning about this hilarious world of vibrators, fake orgasms and nighttime callers. When the hot line is hung up and reality comes calling, the most meaningful relationship of their lives is put to the test.

It plots Lauren Miller (the “Moaner and Groaner” from Zack and Miri Make a Porno) and The Sitter‘s Ari Graynor as a pair of unlikely roommates who fall upon hard times in an economy that has no room for attractive, likely well-educated, stylish city gals. So they decide to go into business working the lines of a homegrown phone sex operation. It appears to be a tale of sexual awakening, complete with massive dildos and airline pilot Seth Rogen.

The comedy from AdScott Pictures, based on the real life escapades of Miller and longtime friend Naylon, first premiered at January’s Sundance film festival. Penned by Miller and Naylon, For a Good Time Call… is Travis’ debut feature and stars Miller and Graynor as frenemies turned roommates who end up launching a phone sex operation out of their NY apartment to make ends meet and become friends in the process. The female-driven story about friendship also stars Long, Nia Vardalos, Mimi Rogers, James Wolk, Mark Webber and features scenes with Miller’s real-life husband Rogen and Kevin Smith.

When we first saw this film at Sundance we knew that we wanted to be the ones to bring this film to audiences,” Focus Features President Andrew Karpen said. Karpen highlighted the “tremendous amount of heart” in the film from its "very, very passionate” team.

Graynor agrees. “We are so, so wide-eyed about this whole experience. Every screening, I get massive birthday party syndrome that no one's going to come, that no one's going to laugh, that it will be really embarrassing somehow. And to walk into Union Square theaters today and have it be such a real situation and a full house and people laughed and loved it, I can't express how amazing and exciting and overwhelming and beautiful this experience is,” she told THR of presenting the Manhattan-set comedy in its home town.

Graynor, who is also on the big screen this summer in Lee Toland Krieger’s Celeste and Jesse Forever, waxed nostaglic at thescreening. “The phone sex call with Kevin Smith was the first thing we shot in the movie so that's quite a memory when I see that and I know how anxious and nervous I was. It was the first thing we did on the movie then suddenly I was meeting the crew and on the bed doing all of those shenanigans. It's insane to watch that,” she said, adding: “Lauren and I had such an amazing time together and developed such a beautiful friendship.

The red-band trailer did a good job of summing up the plot and humor, but the new green band trailer can only deliver the plot synopsis because dirty words are the devil’s language and thus not appropriate for all audiences. I would recommend watching the red-band and green-band trailers back-to-back so you can marvel at the comparison of how bland the film looks when it can’t rely on its filthy-language hook.

Two former college rivals team up to start a lucrative business while sharing a New York apartment in this comedy from director Jamie Travis. Back in school, Lauren (Lauren Anne Miller) and Katie (Ari Graynor) had a love/hate relationship. Years later, Lauren is recovering from a messy break-up, and Katie is living in her late grandmother's apartment when the rent control runs out. In order to avoid losing the apartment, Katie invites Lauren to move in and help out with the payments. Fate intervenes, however, when Katie becomes fed up with Lauren's boisterous bedroom antics, and learns that her new roommate has a naughty side that could earn them both some quick cash. With Lauren in charge of the business and Katie catering to the clients, the mismatched pair launch a phone-sex line that quickly proves a smashing success. Justin Long, Mark Webber, and Nia Vardalos co-star.

Pushed together by mutual gay friend Jesse (Justin Long, from He’s Just Not That Into You) so they can share the rent on a desirable New York apartment, Lauren and Katie start a phone sex business which at first brings them together but later threatens their budding friendship.

First time feature director Jamie Travis (known in the art world for his experimental short films) lets Graynor - who resembles and sometimes seems to be channelling Bette Midler - and Miller (who occasionally brings Shelley Long to mind) dominate the screen. The two leads get able support from Long and there are funny cameos from Seth Rogan, Kevin Smith and Nia Vardalos.
