Autoglass: Knowing The Difference Between Windscreen Glass and Other Glass

Posted by novusautoglass on March 13th, 2020

If you own a car then you would notice the parts on your car that are valuable to you such as the engine, the bumpers, the wheels and even the tyres. But do you value your windscreen? Moreover, did you know that your windscreen and your windows in your side doors are made from different types of glass? That’s ok, not a lot of people do. If you’ve noticed your front windscreen is curved. This is to stop it from smashing into little pieces and offers an aerodynamic look to the vehicle. This is also designed to protect you from any debris should you be involved in an accident.

So… What Is The Difference?

Front Windscreen

All windows on your vehicle are made from safety auto glass and are compliant to theOEM. The front windscreen is made up of three consistent layers being the laminated glass in the middle accompanied by the tempered glass on each side. Which means it is just a plastic layer between two pieces of glass. This is so if you’re ever in an accident, the glass is only meant to crack but not shatter. The laminated layer is designed to hold all the broken pieces together to prevent further injury. When the front windscreen is made, it’s placed into an oven-like machine called autoclave and when it is released from the oven, it is quickly moulded into a curved shape to retain durability.

Side/Back Windows

However, the side and back windows are all made from tempered glass and have gone through a tempered process of constant heating and rapid cooling. Unlike the laminated glass, if the tempered glass were to break, it would shatter into tiny pieces rather than shards. This is also to prevent further injury to both the passengers and the driver.

What is OEM?

Original Equipment Manufacturers are companies who make parts that are manufactured for your car. They work closely with car manufacturers to ensure that every part installed into your vehicles are compliant and are in perfect working order. Should your vehicle need a replacement part, some repair companies have OEM parts or aftermarket parts such as auto glass. Bothe aftermarket and OEM parts work well though aftermarkets are relatively cheaper.
