Having Chapped lips? Cracking a smile...are your lips dry? Are your lips so dry

Posted by chriss on March 13th, 2020

Are your lips so dry that you when you smile, you literally "crack" a smile? Now, that's dry! Having chapped or dry lips aren't much different from having dry skin.

For example, if you have chapped hands, that means they are dry, red and possibly irritated and bleeding. It's the same with chapped lips and they can be painful. There's even an actual term for that ring around your lips that you can get. It's called: "Lip Licker's Dermatitis". If you don't know what I'm talking about, think back to when you were a kid. Kids get them all the time because they tend to lick their lips so much. As we get older, we discover lip balm (i.e. Chapstick) and it soon becomes one of our very best friends.

So, what can you do to help relieve those chapped lips? Again, just like dry skin, these steps can help your lips:

1. You need humidity - use a humidifier

2. Use a moisturizer - for lips, use lip balm. It's best to use one with a sunscreen. And, believe it or not, lipstick can sometimes help your lips too.

3. If lips become infected, try using an over the counter antibiotic ointment.

4. Over the counter, hydro-cortisone ointments can also help.

5. Drink lots of water.

6. B vitamins can help

7. Stop licking your lips

8. Exfoliate lips

I'll help explain in more detail below and give you some suggestions on what you can use to help those red lips become a beautiful natural pink.

First, you need humidity

Create it!

If you live in an area that gets cold and dry in the winter months, you need to create your own humidity. This can be easily done!

Honeywell Germ-Free Cool Mist Humidifier, HCM-350

This is a really good unit to help humidify your room - especially while you sleep.

Crane Drop Shape Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier with 2.3 Gallon output per day
Vicks 1.5 Gallon Vaporizer with Night-Light
Vicks Warm Mist Humidifier with Auto Shut-Off

Here's a warm mist option. Personally, I like the cool mist humidifiers. There are some drawbacks to the warm mist humidifiers, but do what you think is best.

Moisturize those lips

You need to moisturize your lips in order to keep them hydrated.

Some options are: Chapstick, Carmex, Lipstick

Then, you can also try over the counter antibiotic ointments if your lips become infected. Try Bacitracin or Neosporin.

Over the counter, hydro-cortisone ointments are helpful too.

If your lips are really bad, use a lip balm during the day but apply Bacitracin ointment before you leave for work, then apply hydro-cortisone at bedtime.

The best options

  •        Use a lip balm with sunscreen. Try Chapstick or Carmex.
  •        Lipstick helps
  •        Bacitracin ointment
  •        Neosporin
  •        Hydro-cortisone
  •        Great for all-day moisturizing...or find your favorite lip balm.
  •        Very beneficial for dry lips - Carmex is a long time favorite
  •        Drink lots of water!!!
  •        And, consider taking some B vitamins.

Natural ways to keep your lips hydrated

NALGENE Tritan 1-Quart Narrow Mouth BPA-Free Water Bottle, Gray

I have this water bottle. It's great to use at work so you drink water whenever you can. An added benefit is that it is BPA free!

No lip licking!

The more you lick your lips, the drier they will become!!! You may get short relief, but after the saliva dries, your lips will feel drier than they did before you licked them. You'll start on a vicious cycle of licking your lips...which will lead to an actual condition called Lip Lickers Dermatitis (as shown in the picture...if you look closely, you'll see the edges of the lips are darker). The more you lick, the drier you become and the redder the ring around those lips.

Believe it or not, exfoliating your lips can help. My favorite is the Nutt So Ruff Face Bar but you can choose any exfoliator that you like.

Start out with once a week and then gradually move on to two to three days a week once your skin normalizes.

Afterward, apply a lip balm to keep them hydrated. And, of course, drink lots and lots of water. Your lips will soon be soft again!
