What You Should Know Before You Get Into Trail Running

Are you getting a little bored of the same sidewalk and bike paths? Spring is here, and if you live near trail systems in the foothills, you have the perfect chance to mix things up. Tons of athletes enjoy the challenge and serene experience of trail running, and it could offer the same benefits for you too. Trail running is much different than road running, however, so it’s essential to keep the following tips in mind.

Proper Footwear Is Key

When running on the pavement or treadmill, you know what to expect. It’s the same smooth experience every time minus a couple of stray pebbles or uneven cracks. Out in mother nature, however, things go as she pleases. When you’re first starting out on mellow gravel trails, road running shoes will work, but once you get into muddy, rocky territory, you’ll need trail running shoes. They’ll provide better traction, increased protection and help with stability too.

Prepare for Obstacles

Part of the joy of trail running is its unpredictable nature. You’re running up and down hills, leaping over roots and sidestepping boulders rather than waiting for a traffic signal to let you cross. While experts do all of this with ease, if you’ve never run trails before, it’s easy to get caught off guard. Make sure to keep your eyes on the stretch of trail ahead and don’t be above walking (or hiking) when you need to. These tips will keep you safe and ease you into the challenge of more advanced trail running.

Dress for Trail Success

Weather can be a factor when out on the trails. If you’re running through a forest, it might be colder than the parking lot, so it’s essential to layer with lightweight jackets and sweaters. Also, chances are you’re going to get a bit dirty out on the trails, and that’s okay. It’s a part of the experience. But if you’re a bit of a clean freak, consider wearing activity appropriate black shoes and similar attire, so you don’t ruin your favorite bright white sneakers.

Go for Time Instead of Distance to Start

In road running and treadmill running, we usually set our goal based on distance. We want to run X number of miles and will stop at nothing until we reach that goal. Trail running tends to be a bit different, however. Trails are much more variable than a flat run on the sidewalk or treadmill. You’ll be running uphill at varying grades and performing more acrobatic moves like lunging or jumping than on a typical run. This uses more energy, which means you’ll be more strained trying to reach that distance goal. Given this, your numbers on the trail will likely be different than on the road, so avoid trying to keep the same pace. Instead, set an amount of time you’d like to be out on the trails and stick to it.

With the right gear, technique and expectations, any roadrunner can get a great workout in and have an excellent time out on the trails. Read up on the trails near you and make trail running your go-to cardio exercise this spring and summer.
