5 Tips in Choosing the Right Orthodontist for Your Family

Posted by John Dalton on March 19th, 2020

A lot of parents have trouble when it comes to figuring which orthodontist to go to when your oldest kids are ready for braces, and this is usually because there simply are so many orthodontists within any city or town. Going through your options may be rather easy thanks to search engines, but how exactly should you narrow down your choices to fully understand the perfect orthodontist for you and your family?

We’re very lucky to have partnered up with James Karpac Orthodontics, an orthodontist dublin ohio, to help us compile this list of 5 tips oriented around choosing the right orthodontist for your family.

So here are the 5 tips you need to consider!

Talk to Recommendations/References

Every orthodontist website will have a testimonial page, but this isn’t something that you should consider as thorough when it comes to getting to know what it’s like to work with any particular orthodontist. When you’re in the process of narrowing down your best options, feel free to ask the orthodontist for a few recommendations or references that you can actually speak with.

When you talk to an orthodontist’s past clients you’ll undoubtedly get a much more objective perspective as to what it’s like to work with that particular office, not just the orthodontist themselves.

Utilize Your Free Consultations

All orthodontists offer free consultations, and this provides a really great opportunity for parents to get an understanding as to how much a particular orthodontic treatment may cost and what it will entail. For parents, this consultation can be a form of job interview where you can get to know the office and the orthodontic team and see if they’re the right fit for your family.

Comparing your free consultations with multiple orthodontic offices will help you and your children better understand which orthodontic team and office is best.

Consider Pricing

A lot of people have orthodontist insurance, but this will still only cover a small portion of what it costs to go through braces or invisible aligners. You’ll need to ask orthodontists to be completely honest and upfront with you in terms of how much an orthodontic treatment will cost, and then compare these prices accordingly.

This isn’t our #1 tip for a reason, because pricing shouldn’t 100% dictate your decision-making. A high-quality orthodontist may cost a bit more, but in the end it may be worth it to go the more expensive route. On the other side of the coin, just because an orthodontist is expensive doesn’t mean they’re generally better than their competition.

When it comes down to it, you should always make a financial decision that makes the most sense for your budget.

Location

Orthodontist visits can be more frequent than most parents would originally guess, which can be around once or even twice per month in some instances. This means parents need to strongly consider their commute and overall convenience in getting their kids to and from their orthodontist’s office.

The location of the office is something you should strongly consider, but if a really great orthodontist is a bit far away it doesn't mean they shouldn’t be considered.

Trust Your Intuition

When it comes down to it, you need to trust yourself and what your kids think when you are making your final hiring decision. Think about how each orthodontist made you and your kid feel and how polite their staff was, as well as all the other factors we discussed here!
