For instance, if the valve is used to control the flow of fuel, the valve would close completely in case of an air failure.

On the basis of number of plugs

On the basis of number of plugs, these valves can be distinguished into single-seated valves and double-seated valves. Both work phenomenally well under suitable conditions and are equipped with a number of benefits. One such benefit of the single-seated valve is that it can be completely closed and hence, the variation of the flow till 100 percent can be attained.

On the basis of flow characteristics

Flow characteristics are defined as how the rate of flow changes with the corresponding movement. Such flow characteristics are primarily dependent upon the shape and size of the plug. Under this, valves are classified into two categories namely- ideal or inherent characteristics and installed or effective characteristics. When the flow characteristics are defined by the shape and size of the plug it is known as inherent characteristic and when the valve is connected to a pipeline, it is known as installed characteristics.
