The Museu de l’eròtica in Barcelona is a museum of erotic art, dedicated and consisting of ten halls in which a large smorgasbord is divided. The collection consists of more than 800 objects. Gustav Klimt was born in 1862 in the Viennese suburb of Baumgarten, in an extended family. His father is a goldsmith and his two brothers devote themselves to artistic professions.

At the age of 14, Gustav Klimt went to the Vienna School of Applied Arts. Through his apprenticeship, he began with theater decorations, wall and ceiling paintings in Vienna together with his brother Ernst Klimt and his friend Franz Matsch.

In 1883 Gustav Klimt left the school of applied arts and moved into his own studio with his brother Ernst and Franz Matsch. Together they form the "Maler-Compagnie" and continue their orders for wall and ceiling painting. In their work, they concentrate on ornamental pictures that they design as commissioned works for the architects. You can still admire her ceiling paintings in the Theater von Fiume, in the Kurhaus and in the Stadttheater in Karlsbad. The Emperor Franz Josef's Golden Cross of Merit is awarded to them especially for their paintings on the walls and ceilings of the Vienna Burgtheater. In addition to these commissions, Klimt also paints as a portrait artist in his studio.

The beginning of a new time
His younger brother Ernst died in 1892. This officially ends the collaboration between him and Franz Matsch. Approx. 5 years later the two artists work together on a commission. He produces three paintings for the University of Vienna. He begins with a longer work on his painting "Philosophy". However, Klimt's paintings do not meet the tastes of the resident Viennese professors - they consider his work to be pornographic and ugly.

Gustav Klimt is moving away from the traditional style of the academies, in search of his own style. In 1897 he and 19 other artists founded the association of Austrian artists, "Secession". The Vienna Secession quickly developed into a stronghold of Art Nouveau and became its Austrian epitome and synonym. Until 1899 he was the president of this association.
