Ways to Sanitize or Care for Your Facial Sponge

Just like any sponge or bath product, personal care is required to prevent the bacteria buildup and molds formation. The best way to avoid mold formation or the growth of the bacteria in your exfoliating facial sponge is to buy a new one. If you don’t want to get a new one or replace the old one as frequently, then try these ideas to sanitize or care for your sponge.

  1. Keep your sponge dry. After the usage rinses your sponge with water and ensures that there is no soap or cleanser left in it. Take out the excess water by pressing the sponge gently in between your hand palms. Remember do not squeeze or twist too hard. Then hang the sponge to dry and do not hang or keep it in a humid or damp place.
  2. Refrigerate the sponge after use. You can store the clean sponge inside the refrigerator either in a Ziploc bag or a sealed container. Run through the clean water before soaking into warm after before using.
  3. Soak your exfoliating facial sponges in little hot (not boiling water) for at least 4-5 minutes to disinfect the sponge. Don’t use the boiling water as it would deform the sponge due to the natural vegetable fiber characteristics. Drain the water and let the sponge cool off before removing the excess water then hang it to dry. This method is done only when is needed.
  4. For the sanitization of the sponge, place the sponge in a bowl full water into the microwave and then microwave it for 1-2 minutes with monitoring it. Never microwave a dry or damp sponge. Do not squeeze the sponge just after taking out as it would be too hot and could cause burn. When it gets cooled off, rinse with cold water and left to dry.
