Top Packing Mistakes to Avoid

Posted by wolley movers on March 24th, 2020

Packing up to move to a new residence is an exciting process. A change of scenery can be refreshing and the prospect of settling into a new environment brings new opportunities. But packing is nearly everyone's least favorite part of the process. It's easy to see why; packing puts your life on hold and takes a very long time.

These tips can help ease the process for you. Here are the top packing mistakes you should avoid.

Packing by Room

Try to avoid packing items based on the room they're to be placed in. While this may seem to make unpacking easier, mixing objects of different sizes, weights, and shapes from one room can increase your chances of damaging items during the move. Try packing by item type instead, separating items like wall art, towels, lamps, and solid decorative objects into their own collective boxes.

Packing Everything in a Cardboard Box

Cardboard boxes may seem like the ultimate packing container, but they aren't for everything. Some objects, like books, are so heavy that they may need to be packed in crates. Most wall art and mirrors should be wrapped in a protective bubble wrap and packing paper rather than boxed up. Some objects may also have their own container, the container you received the object in, that would be best for moving. For example, if you bought an object in a cardboard tube or plastic clamshell, it may be best packed in its original container.

Packing Late

Plan ahead--very far ahead. It takes a shocking amount of time to pack on your own. You don't just need a few days. You need several weeks. However, you can hire residential moving in Chicago to help you with this task. This can save you time that you need to handle other moving-related errands like changing your address at your bank and post office.

Overstuffing Boxes

Don't overstuff boxes when you pack your home. It may be a shortcut to packing, but it can make moving and unpacking more of a chore than it needs to be. For example, a cardboard box full to the brim with books may be so heavy that it won't move easily. If you're not careful, you can even tear boxes. Commonly overpacked items include small appliances, makeup and other beauty products, non-perishable foods, and electronics. Pack them like you'll be the one lifting the box in which you pack them.

Follow this advice and packing should be a much smoother process. Remember that you can enlist professional residential moving in Chicago for help with your transition. Call a mover near you to learn more.
