How to Stay in Shape While Traveling

Posted by Reebok on March 25th, 2020

No matter how dedicated you are to your home gym, traveling can throw even the best of us off our game. From busy work trips where every meal is out with a client or coworkers to personal vacations where we cut loose, it’s easy to slip up. While in the long run, a week off the fitness train isn’t going to derail your progress completely, it most certainly can disrupt it. Luckily, with a few tweaks to your schedule and a bit of determination, you can keep your momentum rolling and keep crushing your goals wherever you are in the world.

Book a Hotel with a Gym—And Use It

The most obvious way to stay on track while traveling is to book a hotel with a gym. Keep in mind that some hotel gyms are better than others, so if you’re used to working out with battle ropes, sleds or squat racks, you might be a bit disappointed. Even so, there’s nothing stopping you from making the most out of a few machines, a kettlebell and a treadmill in a tiny hotel gym. Modify your workout where necessary and don’t let any excuses keep you from getting in there and putting in the work.

Pick Up Running and Learn Your Destination City

If you can’t get access to a hotel gym or find a local spot to drop-in, lace up your shoes and run. Running outside gives you not only a fantastic workout, but you also have a chance to explore the surroundings too. So, slip on your gym shorts, lace up your running shoes and explore the area around the hotel or even farther.

Walk Whenever Possible

If your schedule is so cramped you don’t even have time to hit the hotel gym or go for a run, opt for a brisk walk whenever possible. Sure, walking might not be a heart-pounding HIIT workout, but it’s better than taking a car everywhere you go. You can also add a little bit of core, quad and glute flexing to your walks to stimulate a bit more muscle activity that can make even a half-mile walk more strenuous.

Maintaining Your Nutrition Is Key

Proper nutrition is a must. It’s easy to let your diet take a backseat, especially when you’re on vacation or a work trip, but it’s still essential. Maintain your nutrient balance when possible and treat yourself when it feels right. Listen to your body and you’ll return home ready to crush it on your home turf.

Pack What You Need

Sometimes the easiest way to ensure that you don’t miss a workout while traveling, whether for business or for pleasure, is to pack your gym essentials. Even with limited space, there’s always room for a pair of cross-training shoes and gym shorts. Pro tip: Things such as athletic leggings and even some men’s shorts can be great for the gym and out and about on your vacation. You’ll save space in your bag and eliminate the “not having workout clothes” excuse.

The Bottom Line

There’s nothing wrong with having fun when traveling for work or play, but your goals shouldn’t have to pay the price. Stick to your food and exercise plan when possible but allow for some flexibility too—there’s no reason you can’t have fun and make progress while you’re traveling.
