Points To Remember Before Filing A Policy Claim After A Disaster

Disasters are unpredictable and unreliable. When it passes by, it leaves a lot of mess behind it which makes it difficult to understand where to start to make things right. Working quickly instead of panicking in such a situation can help keep you in a state of priority and can be useful in getting immediate support.

Do not file the claims without being fully prepared! If any of the information provided by you proved invalid, the insurance disaster adjuster might cancel your claim. Before filing the disaster claim, you should be fully prepared with the following:

1) Survey Your Property And Make A List Of All Damage:

Before calling the insurance adjuster for a visit, make sure you do not move anything but make a list of damaged goods. This survey list will help you in providing information to the insurance company and disaster adjuster about how much damage you have suffered due to this damage.

2) Take Photos And Videos Of All Damages Immediately:

Remember to take photographs and videos of all the damages inside and outside the house as soon as possible. These photos and videos will act as a weapon to prove the type of damage you have gone through.

3) Do Not Throw Out The Damaged Property:

Do not throw your damaged property even by mistake. The insurance company can send its inspector anytime to get your damage goods inspected. If he does not get any sign of your damaged property, then he might say the company to cancel your refund.

4) Assess Your Immediate Needs:

Try to protect your home from further damages, but do not make any extensive or permanent repairs. Wait until the damage has been properly assessed. Also, be cautious with expenditures because only reasonable temporary repairs will be considered as a part of the total settlement.

5) Stay In Touch With The Company:

Stay in touch with the insurance company. After contacting your insurance company, make sure that the insurance adjuster gives a visit within a couple of days. If an adjuster does not contact you to set up a visit within three days, call the insurance company back.

6) Document The Damage And Keep It Ready:

Keep your damage document ready when the disaster adjuster visits—this is the time your damage will be officially assessed. Your documents will only help in speeding up the process of getting a detailed estimate of your property damage.

By considering the above-given points before filing the policy might help you in dealing with the insurance company and its adjuster.
