Acuvue - Innovations in Contact Lenses

Posted by AngeloEverton on September 5th, 2012

Acuvue has been the one company that is always a step ahead of the others when it comes to cutting edge innovations in the world of contact lenses. The Acuvue Oasys are a perfect example of this. Meet the first contact for constant wear that has all of the innovations of a daily wear contact and more.

Acuvue, owned by Johnson & Johnson, has usually been the first to get their foot in the door in the world where contacts meet technology. They strive to provide the most comfortable and easy-to-use contact lenses on the market. Acuvue is the only company to provide ultraviolet radiation protection on all of their products, a fairly recent technology that has come about. Previously, no contact lenses offered any protection against UV rays.

Other features found in every single pair of contact lenses produced by Acuvue are the light blue tint that helps to make it easy to see inside the package or case, together with a special inside out indicator. While that feature in itself is not necessarily all that special and can be found in various brands of contacts, Acuvue are consistent and always use “1-2-3”, which will become reversed if the lens is facing the wrong way.

Many of the Acuvue lenses are made with silicone based hydrogels. It is easy to determine if a contact lenses is made with these materials because they will end with the suffix “-filcon”.  For instance, the daily disposable Trueye lenses are made of narafilcon B and water while Acuvue oasys are made with a mixture of 62% senofilcon and 38% water.

The Acuvue oasys is a contact meant to be disposed of every two weeks rather than daily, or can be worn for six consecutive days before they must be disposed of. Part of this is due to the lesser amount of water used than in daily contact lenses. By having less water, it is a sturdier lens that can handle more than a single day of use. Acuvue makes many kinds of contacts for all types of eye problems, including astigmatisms.

The Acuvue oasys lenses are meant only for near sighted and far sighted vision problems. This particular lens offers the same UV protection as the Trueye lens, 96% of UVA are filtered out and 99% of UVB rays are prevented from reaching the sensitive rods and cones at the back of the eye, making the lens become categorised as a class 1 lens.  Acuvue oasys contact lenses have one of the highest breathability ratios, allowing as much as 98% of the available oxygen to enter the eye. This helps to keep your eyes from becoming red and irritated. The Acuvue Oasys lenses are made with a unique process known as Hydraclear Plus, which is trademarked by Johnson and Johnson. This process actually involves embedding a moisture agent of some kind into the contact lens, making it much easier to maintain wetter contacts for better visibility.
