Movie Review (Synopsis): Aspiring rock star Joby Taylor (Paul Dano) has wanted nothing more than to "make it", having flirted with fame but never crossed over into true success. In the midst of a low period in his life, he agrees to sign divorce papers with his estranged wife (Margarita Levieva) in order to see money from the sale of their home, only to discover that by signing the papers, he will forfeit all custody of his six-year-old daughter, Ellen (Shaylena Mandigo). With a good-natured lawyer (Jon Heder) unable to make headway in reversing the decision, and a girlfriend (Jena Malone) that represents an era of his life that he might be ready to graduate from, Joby negotiates a visit with his daughter to explore whether he is able to walk away from his child, and whether it might be too late for reconciliation.
With a directorial voice as consistent as that of any current American independent filmmaker, So Yong Kim takes what could have been routine story elements and transforms them into something deeply sad and touching in "For Ellen." As a struggling rocker making a last-ditch attempt to gain shared custody of his daughter, Paul Dano delivers a beautifully wrought performance in a different key from any of his previous roles. The movie, filmed over an 18-day period in early 2010, also stars Paul Dano (“Little Miss Sunshine,” “There Will be Blood”) and Jon Heder (“Napoleon Dynamite,” “Blades of Glory.”) Mr. Dano plays a struggling musician who rethinks life after finding out divorce meant losing custody of his daughter, Ellen (Mandigo). “For Ellen,” screened at the Sundance Film Festival last winter, will debut at select theaters in New York City, Seattle, Denver, Miami and Chicago between Sept. 5 and Oct. 19. There are no planned Massena or north country screenings listed on Tribecca Film’s web site, but Time Warner Video on Demand subscribers can view the film starting Sept. 19.
The film’s producer, Jen Gatien, is a cousin of retired Massena Police Department Sergeant Douglas E. Kassian, who recommended the town for the film and helped the director scout out locations. Delmar Sportsmen’s Tavern, Pappy’s Bowlmor Lanes and Mr. Kassian’s house were among the shooting locations. The film’s release is coinciding with two other events in Miss Mandigo’s life. She is about to start fourth grade at Nightengale, and she is flying to New York in September for her next film role. Just this week, Shaylena entered a confidentiality agreement with another film studio in Los Angeles to audition for a different film. Soon after Sundance, Nickelodeon contacted her to audition for a children’s musical show called “Bubble Guppies.” A representative from Paramount Pictures also reached out to the family and said the company would keep Shaylena in mind for future roles. Eric Kohn reviewed the film at Sundance, declaring that, "Nobody else could fit the role of a crestfallen rocker that Paul Dano embodies in director So Yong Kim's remarkable 'For Ellen.' Kim's delicate feature takes the conventional deadbeat dad formula and rejuvenates it by letting Dano's naturalistic performance lead the way." The main character’s name in For Ellen is not Ellen, that’s the kid. Actually it’s Joby Taylor. He’s worked hard for years to become a rock star, and he’s come close, but now he might be closer than ever. He needs to finalize his divorce though. He’ll get money out of a home after signing the papers, so he does only to discover that by signing the papers he’s also giving away custody of his daughter, essentially taking himself out of her life unless the mother allows him in. Dano doesn't exactly shy from darker material, neither does director So Yong Kim, whose 2008 feature Treeless Mountain followed two young sisters abandoned by their their mother while she looks for her missing husband. Still, the For Ellen trailer emits a haunting and heartbreaking feel, which may be a breath of fresh air for anyone tired from a summer of sequels, prequels, comic book movies, and other studio tentpoles. Joby (Dano) has just made a long-distance overnight drive to meet with Claire (Margarita Levieva). The two are also meeting with their lawyers to go over divorce papers. What Joby doesn’t realize is that in order to receive his settlement, Claire wants him to give up his rights to their daughter Ellen (Shaylena Mandigo). After a hard night at the local bar, he meets again with his own lawyer, Butler (Jon Heder) to go over his options. That night, Butler invites Joby over to his mother’s house for dinner then the two head back to the bar where Joby starts to come to light on his situation. Joby makes a last ditch effort to see what he’s been missing and sets up a playdate with Ellen where he finally realizes that he truly wants whatever is best for everyone, even if it may wind up being the worst for himself.
