What Does Canada's Law Say About Cannabis?

Posted by Alexmarshallca on April 20th, 2020

It was not long ago that cannabis became legal in Canada for medicinal purposes. This legalization of marijuana in 2001 opened the door to a new opportunity and helped shape the next stage of the "weed law." After the cannabis act of June 2018, cannabis was officially made legal for both medicinal and recreational purposes on 17th October 2018. In this article, we discuss everything you need to know about Canada's Cannabis law.

The law states that adults in Canada can legally grow, purchase, possess and use marijuana for recreational purposes. The legal age, however, for this law to be applied varies in different states. It is 19 years and above, all over Canada except for Alberta and Quebec, where the legal age to possess cannabis is 18 years.

Various other rulings surrounding this law also vary in different states.

E.g., the maximum amount to possess the dried weed in all states is 30 grams, but at home, you are allowed a lot more. For instance, in British Columbia, you can have up to 1 kilograms of marijuana at home, and there is no limit over the amount of weed at home in Manitoba.

Where you can legally use the weed is also different in different states. For example, in Prince Edward, cannabis is legal to use only in the private residence. In British Columbia, smoking weed is prohibited in the car or near children. It is the same in Nova Scotia, where one can get fined with 00 for breaking the law.

Nevertheless, the drug is available in online and retail stores around the country. Each household is allowed to grow four marijuana plants.

With so many different rules around the cannabis law in Canada, people often get arrested or charged for its possession mistakenly. Therefore, in case you regularly use marijuana, it is always a good idea to know how to deal with such charges

Does The Law Apply To The Tourists?

As soon as the country passed the law, cannabis lovers from all over the world started flooding Canada. The reason is even a tourist if he abides by the laws of the Cannabis Act and follows rules of the state can possess, buy, sell, or cultivate it. However, you can not take the weed back to your country. It is the case even if you live in a country/state where cannabis is legal.

Drug Offenses Related to Cannabis

Even though the drug is legal, you can still get into trouble for the possession or use of marijuana if you're doing it out of the framework of the law. For example, selling it without a license, driving under the influence, using under the age of 18, and so on. Therefore, understanding the law on cannabis in Canada is of extreme importance
