Approved Enteral Feeding Tubes

Feeding an infant or a new born child is indeed the trickiest part of providing nutrition. The frail infant may not be strong enough to latch on to the breast or suck to have the milk directly flow to one’s mouth. The specialist doctors at the medical facility may find it beneficial to introduce a supplemental nursing system (SNS) consisting of a storage container and thin flexible milk tubes that is taped securely to the breast of the mother. The concerned baby is able to get a steady flow of milk directly from the breast as well as the tube thus satiating the need. However, the care giver may also insert the tube directly into the infant’s mouth when the supply from the breast gets exhausted midway.
While there are different ways to feed a baby when the milk supply from the mother is not enough, feeding by spoon or using a bottle to fulfill the purpose is not s effective as utilizing the milk tubes. There are two distinct types of commercial supplemental nursing systems in vogue at present with a soft bag being employed to store human milk or formula. Another option is to go for a hard and compact storage device. There is no right or wrong option here as both the systems come with their own pros and cons. One can also choose to use a homemade supplemental system as an alternative.
Milk Flow Control
It is important to control the rate of flow when using a SNS. The speed should be optimum for the baby so that the infant gets to swallow the right amount of milk during the feed. Speedy flow is likely to have much of the milk go waste as it would flow all over the mouth and chin drenching the baby and depriving it of precious nutrients simultaneously. However, an inordinately slow rate of flow will leave the baby unsatisfied and impatient. Moreover, a weak infant will not have the strength to keep feeding for a long time and may turn off from the breast without receiving proper nutrition.
The care giver or mother should ensure that the milk flow remains regulated by checking the following:-
Diameter- It is essential to inspect the diameter of the tube before using it for lactation. Sure, the process may be perfected by trial and error. However, it may be best to choose a commercial SNS that includes multiple sized tubes to be used as per the need.
Position- One also needs to position the source of milk perfectly so that the right quantity of milk flows into the mouth of the infant. A health worker is the best person to train the new mother about the dos and donts of using the milk tubes.
Using the best quality enteral feeding tubes is also of paramount importance while ensuring proper nutrition of a pre term or underweight infant. The facilities need to source a pliable and soft material in order to administer the proper amount of nutrition. Both Legacy feeding tubes and ENFit connectors fitted to the tubes meet the requirement admirably. Also See: Supplemental Nursing, Milk Tubes, Proper Nutrition, Nursing System, Milk, Flow, Tubes
