Know More About ECU Chip Tuning

The ECU – or electronic control unit – is the powerhouse in any vehicle. Modern vehicles use a lot of electronics to determine how fuel is delivered, when transmission needs to be shifted, ignition timing, RPM etc. The ECU controls all the components which are part of the drive train. It is a small computer which is connected to all the sensors in the vehicle. The sensors send readings to the ECU, which are read and then adjustments are accordingly made to various parts like the fuel delivery and ignition timing systems to channel the right amount of fuel and air to the engine.

The main job of the ECU is to ensure that all readings are accurate, and send messages to the operator through a panel if maintenance is needed. As with any instrument, the ECU also needs to be tuned for optimum performance. The electronics in modern cars are pretty sophisticated – ECU chip tuning is done using a regular interface, using software in the Onboard Diagnostics section. The engine is hooked up to a computer with the relevant software. It is a process where the chip in the ECU is modified to get better performance from a car in areas such as fuel efficiency, more engine power or fewer emissions. Redundancies are built in the chip to allow for situations where the vehicle may not be serviced regularly, low quality fuel or even allowing for variations in the engine at the time of manufacture.

ECU tuning is also necessary when engines are rebuilt, and new parameters have to be factored. Many manufacturers recommend this for their cars to get good fuel economy and fewer emissions. If tuning is not done or even done right, it results in poor performance and even engine damage. Upgrades to the ECU can be done using plug in modules or on the circuit boards directly. Mapping tools are available for purchase in the market, if users want to do themselves. Another alternative is to add another device – a tuning box. These external devices are great additions – they can be used to change the performance of the car. They can also be taken off so that a vehicle reflects original factory conditions.

Tuning an ECU chip is not too hard but one needs to be very familiar with car engines. Most car engines have electronic circuit boards – there are places where additional boards can be put in – having a computer, which can help to program it further to make the job easier. ECU tuning can be a little expensive but pays off in the long run.

About:

This article is associated with Mobile Ecu Remapping. Mobile ECU Remapping is the UK’s leading provider of ECU remapping, also known as “chip tuning” or “ecu tuning“. As their name suggests they offer a mobile service throughout the UK. It is possible to have your car or van’s ECU remapped to improve your engine tuning. ECU remaps increase the BHP, Torque and fuel economy of your car, van, truck or tractor.
