IRS form 2290 is a form to file tax returns by people who use heavy duty highway vehicles. The IRS recommends all its taxpayers to file this form online so that, it can be filed on time and penalties can be avoided. Filing this form electronically requires the taxpayer to follow certain instructions, so that the form can be correctly filed.

Generally, irs forms 2290 are filed on a monthly basis. The form for the current month has to be filed within the last day of the month immediately succeeding it. This time limit has to be religiously followed regardless of whether the taxpayer has to pay taxes for the month or has to report the suspension of taxes.

Information required for filing these forms includes the correct name of the business along with the details of their address and EIN. It must be noted here that SSN is no longer valid for filing these forms. Any person who does not have the EIN should apply for the same and manually file the tax returns for IRS forms in the interim period. form 2290 instructions also state that taxpayers need to submit their bank account number as well as their number for bank routing. The three payment options available to a taxpayer are check payment, direct debit from the bank account and EFTPS which is an exclusive mode for making online payment for form 2290 tax payers. However, the option for making the tax payment through check is only valid for people filing the returns manually.

On the successful filing of the IRS form 2290 following Form 2290 instructions, IRS acknowledges the same in the form of a watermark specifying the date of filing of the form on the schedule 1. This acknowledgement or proof of successful filing of returns is a mandatory requirement for the renewal of highway vehicle registration at the Motor Vehicles.

In case the IRS is not able to withdraw the tax successfully, it sends out a notice containing instructions advising the taxpayer on his subsequent mode of action. However, the tax credit cannot be claimed while filing the form 2290 even though the same can be used to intimate the IRS about a possible tax credit in your account. Form 8849 is used to claim the tax credit. It should also be kept in mind that, the tax credit can only be reported when a taxpayer either pays his taxes, or reports suspension of the same. There are certain websites that provide the option to pay the heavy vehicle tax online at easy terms. Searching and filing through those websites will save both your time and money.
