Types of USB connectors

Posted by SharonEvans on December 1st, 2012

USB is an acronym for Universal Serial Bus which serves as a connector to a bus system that is used for communication, connection and power supply. This is mostly seen on a computer’s keyboard, pointing device or mouse, printers and scanners. The USB is also a standard connector for technologically advanced cellular phones and palmtop computers as well as portable music players and digital cameras. There are a lot of types of USB connectors that are seen these days and the most common type is the standard USB connector. The other type of connector is mini and micro connectors which is the usual connector for cellular phones and digital cameras. The USB OTG (on-the-go) is the only one which requires a single connector. The Universal Serial Bus also serves as a charging station for devices like digital cameras and tablet computers. The USB charging station is also common for palmtop computers and modern cellular phones.

Standard USB connector

The standard USB connector consists of two plugs which is the standard A and standard B. The standard A plug is used as a connector for both power and data. This type of plug is commonly seen on permanent devices such as the mouse and the keyboard of a computer. The other type which is the standard B plug is a connector for power alone and it is usually seen on removable devices such as printers and scanners. Some computers can be used as USB charging station even if it’s turned off provided that the computer is still plugged on an AVR device.

Micro and mini connector

Before, the mini A and B plugs are usually seen on portable devices such as palmtop computers and advanced cellular phones until it was denounced. It was the micro USB plug that was introduced and then became the standard connector when it comes to charging station and data of portable devices. This is used as USB charging station for sophisticated cellular phones, digital cameras and tablet computers. The micro-USB connector is also regarded as the universal charger for all cellular phones. Aside from the convenience of charging any mobile phone to a single charger which is the micro-USB, it is also rated as more energy-efficient than ordinary chargers.

USB OTG

The USB on the go is not like any other USB connector because this is the only connector that allows devices or gadgets to be the host. Cellular phones and digital cameras can now be attached with a flash drive in case you want to read the contents of the storage device. You can also attach a keyboard and a pointing device to your cellular phone or digital camera using USB on-the-go connector. This kind of connector can also be used as a charging station.
