Is This the first Videogame About Battling Old age?

When it was announced at last year’s E3 Expo, most gamers could rs gold immediately tell Black Knight Sword was a little weird. The downloadable Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 title released in December is set in a theater, with all of the action taking place on a “stage”: The backgrounds wobble and sway as though they’re held up by ropes, and many enemies look more like marionettes or creepy Muppets.

It wasn’t until a headless angel started spitting fire out of a decapitated eagle’s head that i realized this game isn’t just weird. It’s completely unhinged.

Of course, I should have seen this coming considering Black Knight Swords comes from developer Grasshopper Manufacture, a Japanese studio that has been strategically going off the deep end for years. Weird is its signature.

The creators at Grasshopper wear their id on their sleeves, either unwilling or unable to keep their fears and obsessions from shining through in their work. Previous games like No more Heroes and Shadows of the Damned have displayed a rampant obsession with penises and masturbation, the former going so far as to make the player mime the act with the Wii controller each time he recharges his laser sword. The latter, featuring a weapon called “Big Boner, ” was somehow even less subtle.

Black Knight Sword has no discernible penile fixation, but doesn’t appear to be any different in terms of its thematic depth. The core of the game is a fairytale story about an evil princess, but it’s hard to ignore the fact that most of the enemies in the game are some variation of a wrinkled old face. The leathery faces of old men march at you, or swoop down at you from the skies. Sacks made of old faces will explode if you get too close.

Think you’re fighting a boss battle against a valiant white knight? Nope, that’s a giant, wrinkled old face in a suit of armor. Think that creature about to hatch from the enormous Easter Egg is going to be anything but a big face? Incorrect! It’s a humongous bald old man’s face.

I’ve never been the biggest fan of Grasshopper Manufacture’s work, but it’s a developer that you just can’t ignore. They make games in which some part of the soul of the creator can be seen reflected in the work, and that’s an exceedingly rare trait in the commercial videogame business.

The game itself is dizzyingly random. One moment you’re buying items from a floating eyeball, and the next you’re soaring through the air on a chicken the size of a house.

That’s what makes its consistency so glaring. While the developer always comes up with new ideas for what would look bizarre or fun, it always reverts to the same imagery when creating something that is meant to be menacing, intimidating and disgusting: old age.

With all the insanity that goes on in Black Knight Sword, it’s easy to forget that it begins with your ambiguous, featureless character hanging from a rope by his neck inside a small city apartment before being conscripted into battle by the Black Knight suit of armor.

As the Black Knight, your character then spends the next five hours battling the faces of leathery old men. As the game ends, the character loses the Black Knight suit and is returned to the useless, sluggish, form, at which point it climbs back up onto a chair and puts its neck back inside the noose.

Authorial intent is always a tricky thing to wrangle with, but it seems this obscure title might be the first videogame about the struggle against uselessness and old age. source: wired
